1993 KHS Montana Pro, virtually catalogue spec :D

Time for a proper update, with added Zoom factor and pics!

The XT rubber rubber brake covers have now been fitted

The latest delivery contained a shorter OE KHS Zoom stem

as well as OE KHS Zoom 130 bars

The weight has dropped to 11.03kg/24.32lbs 8)

The new shorter stem seems to do just what I wanted it to do, put my backside squarely on the saddle, unlike the longer one which meant I was riding perched on the nose of the saddle

The KHS is almost back to full catalogue spec now, with some period correct parts (wheelset) and modern consumable parts (tyres, chain, cassette, grips..)

Here's a run down of the full spec, the parts listed in red are OE parts.

1993 16" KHS Montana Pro
True Temper OXII tubing

Mag20 fork with Mag21 canti bridge (Period correct)
Stronglight headset (possibly period correct)
OE Zoom stem
OE Zoom 130 bars

OE Kalloy Uno seatpost (date stamped 07.94)
OE Bontrager Ti saddle

X-Lite Ti seatpost bolt
OE XT M095 brake levers with shifter pods
OE XT M736 front mech
OE XT M735 SGS rear mech
OE XT M730 crank arms
(polished by the Lord of the Sith)
Ritchey 24/34/46t chain rings (possibly period correct)
KMC X8 99 chain
Sram PG730 12-32t cassette
BB UN54 bottom bracket
Alivio canti brakes with M System pads

Yes Dave you can have your stem back now too ;)

Nice one Andy :)

Where did you get the Zoom 130? - I'm looking for one :) I may need a longer Zoom stem as well ;)

Cheers

Thanks! Can't wait to try the shorter stem out, my ass was killing me with the longer one making me sit on the nose of the saddle

I got chatting to another KHS owner at the Thetford event, he mentioned that he had the stem and bars from his Montana Pro and he wasn't using them, so I made him an offer to buy them & job's a good 'un!

1st refusal on the longer stem goes to Lewis1641, it was part of the deal when I bought the frame, the stem & seatpost were to be returned to him once I had sourced my own. If he doesn't want the stem for his Montana Team build you're next in line for it.

Nice one on the bars - if you find another, let me know please, or just get it for me ;)

If you could let me know on the stem as well please - I have a 100/110 but reckon I'll want a 120 ish as the TT is quite short (for me) on my Team ;)

Cheers

If anything pops up I'll let you know

Dave (Lewis1641) might be interested in swaps for a shorter Zoom stem, so you may be able to work something out with him once he has the longer one back in his possession, no harm in asking him, he doesn't know I've just got this new one so he's not aware that the longer one is his again!

Give Rutland Cycles a ring, they have some on ebay 8 left , but it doesn't mention any sizes.
The one pictured looks to be 1"version (22.2) but who knows
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ZOOM-RETRO-SILVER ... 790wt_1139

There are a few others on ebay buy they'e 1 1/8" or 1 1/4"

Thanks for all the positive comments on this build :D

I've just unwrapped a pair of OE XT M730/M732 hubs with (non OE) Mavic M231 CD rims laced to them, they need a clean up and service before fitting to the KHS though.

So what's left in the OE Dept to find for this bike...

Well, the Bontrager BCX 1 & BCX2 rims... I'm not too bothered about these rims as rims are a consumable item and I'd have upgraded to Mavic after I'd worn those out, besides Mavic rims look sooo much nicer than the BCX!

Forks... I'll be sticking with the suspension forks as my Arthritis doesn't like fully rigid bikes at all :( So the Mag 20's are staying and getting a spruce up and service

Drivetrain... I have modern equivalent chain and cassette fitted as being a consumable item the OE stuff would have been worn out ages ago. If I can find the OE NOS chain and cassette I will consider fitting those instead. The Chainrings are Ritchey and period correct, if NOS Shimano chainrings were available these would also be fitted

Brakes... the Alivio ones I have on have a XTR look about them once polished up and IIRC don't weigh any more than the OE XT M734, so they're staying 'cos they also look better than the OE M734's

Grips... well the modern ones I have fitted look right and are comfy and lightweight, so they're staying too!

I don't think there's much left to do really, I have some crank caps that look pretty similar to the XT M730 ones coming, so that's sorted, just the barrel adjuster lockring and cable access plug on the shifter to finish off the shifters

Hmm, is this the end of the build?..... probably not lol
