    Retro bikes we've spotted

Not sure if this is retro in terms of years, but it sure is retro in terms of design and materials: Thorn Audax -- Reynolds 853, Ultegra, Ritchey and Brooks. Mmmm . . .

So I came home with a Kona & Gary Fisher frame && My its first post!

Welcome! You describe that tinkering feeling to a tee -- pretty much the reason I'm here too.

1999 18" Kona Pahoehoe frame weight?

Not much help I guess, but the '99 catalogue puts the weight of the full standard build at 23.9 lb.

    Today's Ride

By way of contrast to all those sunny northern hemisphere rides, here we're back to wind, rain and cold, but as today's precipitation was occasional drizzle rather than full downpour, I ventured forth on the usual MTB tracks outside town. It wasn't destined to be a record-breaking event, but...

    Removing a stuck cassette -- no-workshop solution

I'm not sure how technically orthodox this is, but it worked for me and I thought it worth passing on. But first, let me say that it should be done with great care, both for the sake of the mechanic's hands and for the health of the wheel. The background is that I found a nice XTR M950 rear...

    Today's Ride

Finally finally finally, a sunny, near-windless day! To be honest, yesterday was also beautiful but I was on an urgent deadline; today there was a chance to get out on the bike at last instead of sitting joylessly spinning on a trainer in the shed after dark. Headed out on a gentle road route...

Imlach's Sweaty Hippie Funk Collection, adventure bikes, rusty rats, cruisers and other alt bastardisations of bicyclery

It's a fascinating concept -- I hadn't thought about combining it with a gear hub -- sounds like a compelling combination as long as you don't need to remove the wheel!

ever stripped the gears out of an angle grinder? no, me either, but that's basically what's at either end. Well there you have me sir -- neither have I.

Imlach's Sweaty Hippie Funk Collection, adventure bikes, rusty rats, cruisers and other alt bastardisations of bicyclery

I asked a well-known online AI resource what the challenges were to building shaft-drive bicycles. It told me that not only are they heavier, harder to engineer, harder to maintain and limited in gear ratio choice, they are less efficient than chain systems. All well and good, but wouldn't it...

just me and the dog at home That's a very Jack Russell pose -- "where are we going? when are we going? can we go now? do you have any food on you?"
