Well it's not going to be faster if you do multiple iterations and you can't experiment in the same way. So even if you stick to a basic flat drawing on your computer it's far more flexible. But whatever works for you.
Anyway I've started working on a set of templates of different types of frame for my brother to use. More generic and all drawn, no photos. This is the aluminium road frame one I did today with a random gradient applied.
