The correct term is 'ribbed' tubing, not fluted.

many thanks for the answers and given details!

It seems that it could be a kilauea since there is clearly the square tubing close to the BB. However, no trace of repainting, or at least it was quite well done and I am unable to see any trace of a possible old painting. And more surprising, I cannot read any kind of frame number :| would a respraying cover it?

A good chance a respray or over spray would blank it out as it actually looks pretty well done.

Yes that the higher end frame BBT Bulge Butted seattube, took over from the ovalised downtube

Not wanting to start a war here (especially as I haven't really frequented here for so long) but ribs run circumferentially, just like your ribs and other ribbed items....
Flutes run longitudinally.

Tell that to Tange not me ;-)

I believe rib/ribbed actually just means that there are higher and lower sections.
Nothing to do with direction or application.

so finally it could be either a kilauea or explosif frame, isnt' it?
As it stands, I think it must be either a '92 Explosif or a '93 Kilauea.

Most '92 Explosifs used external rack mounts like the Cinder Cone above in the thread, but some didn't. The '93 Kilauea seems the more likely possibility to me because of the combination of Sugino cranks, LX hubs and XT mechs. If you can find a serial number, that might clarify matters, but a '93 bike could well have a '92 serial number.

I don't know how to tell the difference between a '92 Explosif and a '93 Kilauea if both have the later style of brazed-in rack mounts.
