If you had £1000 what would you buy and what spec........

I'd say a steel WTB Phoenix, but I couldn't afford to build it with the parts it would deserve.

To be more realistic, I'd probably get a plain mid-90s Kona and build it up retro-modern with a rigid fork and (horrors!) a disk brake on the front. Then I'd get my '92 Stumpjumper powdercoated bubblegum pink or pistachio, and spend the change on whisky.

A full SRP titanium bolt kit for my GT Zaskar 20th anniversary re-issue.

I can remember replacing chinring bolts and bottle cage bolts on my '93 cinder cone and lifting it up to see if it felt any lighter...
Replacing bolts with aluminium (obviously couldn't afford titanium) was about as retro as Mint Sauce, Bula hats and Frogskins.

idea for a new thread; 'What was the stupidist thing you did to save weight'

Good question (at last ;) )

The patient retrobiker could buy something really quite interesting with £1K. I won't say because it would have a 700c wheel at the moment ;)
