It's a gas less system. Self Shielded Flux Cored wire. The old wire was very old but seemed to weld better.

Perhaps it is like tubular tyres? It has to mature to be at its best!

Presuming you're arc welding then, when i were a lad int' factory, popping meant you were too close.
