1988 Muddy Fox Limited Edition questions

Dirt Disciple
I just picked up a new bike restoration project. Having difficulty with finding the original specs. I found one scan but to small to read any of the details. I think it is a 1988 based on one other post I found. It appears to be a Suntour xc 9000 drive train. The hubs are marked Muddy Fox. Anyone know what the original seat would be? Tossing a Turbo on for now. Hopefully you can help me also with where the serial number would be? Didn't see it on the bottom of the bike.

Wow, like buses!

If you haven’t already have a read of this thread - https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/muddy-fox-prestige-1988-the-£5k-one.448067/page-3

Looks like the same frame as yours and the same roller cam brakes.

I pinched this image from that thread hope that’s ok! Looks like your bike would have had a Muddy Fox branded seat. The others in the thread above have either a Rolls or a Turbo probably in brown/tan.

Just read that thread. Any ideas where to find the serial number? I can't believe how rare this bike is, or at least appears to be. It was originally from a bike shop called Ardvark cycling in the Bay Area close to San Francisco, CA. This is my second Muddy Fox but the green machine is just a frame on the wall of my garage.

It is a pretty rare one though not so much as the one in that thread!

Possible the serial number is underneath the cable guide on the bottom bracket. On my Araya limited edition it’s on the bottom of the seat tube on the non drive side.

Noticed your frame differs from the black/gold prestige frame in that the cable guide is a plastic type on yours vs the integrated type on the black/gold one.

Agree it is not the same bike in the other thread! Different frame tubing, some similarities but brakesand drive train but no gold or chrome.

Great find.....looks great in the flesh, nice colour combo they chose.

Heres the spec sheet, its not a great scan but just about readable if you donwload it.

Only differences I can see between yours and the one in the catalog pic above is the blue frame colour and the stem on yours is white.

And looking at it other than the bar ends and seat everything looks original.

Thanks for the info! Hopefully I can get a little better scan of the specs, even after downloading can't quite make it out.

The color is a grey/blue, morr grey than blue. First thing I noticed is the white stem, it does say Muddy Fox with the paw print. Haven't pulled it apart yet to see if it is black originally. I went ahead and ordered a white Turbo seat for now thinking it will look good.

Unfortunately not much out on the internet about the bike from other users. Doesn't seem very common in the USA, more known in the UK. I have an old green Courier that I have been sitting on because of how hard the parts are to find and it was in rough shap. I mostly restore older Specialized Stumpjumper and Rockhopper bikes.

I just noticed on the price sheet ot shows
"Limited Edition Shogun"
"Limited Edition Samurai"

Wondering what that's about? The funny thing is that I have a 20 inch frame so I guess it could be either?

Well don't have the white Turbo seat yet but could not look at the bike any more with the cheap seat, thru on a black Turbo for now :)
