Couple of points, my butler was hand made in Brigg which last time I checked was in Lincolnshire not Taiwan.
653 was a combo tube set that used 753 stays and 531 main tubes to try and get a best of both worlds tubeset, not a million miles from 753 as about 50% of it was 753.

As for your bikes, (im unsure i would call an obsession.....PMSL..) a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away you realed off a list of your frames to me via PM, and in truth i havnt a clue now, but you did spark my interest at the time.

I find this very intriguing, as that would have been highly out of character for me.

If I did do that I apologise, I must have had a bloody good reason or have been very very drunk. I have never to my knowledge openly told anyone what bikes I have, the plain and simple reason being that I am embarrassed by them until they are built as I see fit.

And, the fact that I never complete a build on them means I am permanently embarrassed by them...

Mate, i promise you did, it was early on for me, it was all very nice, and i was actually buzzing at the time, to know i wasnt the only one with unfinished work.

I have always kept an eye out, and as i said at the time, on the British steel thread, when you mentioned the Dave Yates built Smart Tart, i would love to hear more. You shouldnt be embarrased by not finishing it, christ some of mine have been boxed for decades.

Mate check the forums, theres plenty of info on Reynolds and the differences.

And there is more than one variation in Reynolds 653 tubesets too.

Lots of different stories about 653, but this is what Terry Bill (ex-Reynolds) said:

"653 - superseded 531 pro, consists of 531 lightweight main tubes, 725 rear stays (725 is CrMo and similar in characteristics to 753)"

Unsure with out looking but i suspect the Dawes and the Claud Butlers, have either Reynolds 653atb or 653magnum.

Funny Reynolds constructors tube guide lists it as being a MnMo tubeset like 753 and 531 with the same diameters as 753 on the stays.

and I've seen that thread too but the interesting bit is:

The Reynolds timeline shows 725, 631, and 525 tubing were introduced for OEM use in 1997, while 753 was introduced nearly 20 years earlier in 1976.

The decals history pdf shows the 653 decal as having been available in 1986.

So I think the details maybe hazy in that employees head as 725 didn't even exist when 653 was launched.
