We are leaving! (broadband suppliers...)

i was only aware of the sky route

i thought it wa sky=freesta
and freeview is its own thing? :?

just been to the humax site and it says (well box sales thing) that frresat is dish and freeview is aeiral :?

didnt know that
we have a dish plumbed in but its point in the direction of foreign channels (foreign chap here before)

so which is better now?! argh!
i hate this - decision paralysis!

edit (wow those boxes are expensive?! is it a true one off type thing?)

FreeView is what you know and love through you pointy thing on top of the house, you'll have HD channels on it now or soon, you will need to buy a TV capable of it or a little box. HD does require a new box if you're bothered.

FreeSat is the dish one, many more channels but at the moment you don't get things like Dave and some Sky one's
You do get 4 HD channels currently (BBC 1, BBCHD, ITV HD and C4 HD) reception and picture quality for me is superior and seeing FreeView HD while on holiday (we dont' have it here yet) FreeSat is the way to go :)
Things are added and iPlayer and soon ITV player is on it. I also thinkFreeView HD might have this now (need broadband connection)

Of course you'll probably use both like me, as my TV has it all internally.

There are cheaper add-on boxes if you just want to get it going. You just need to move the dish to the correct satallite. Either guess, use dishpointer website to help or some fangled iPhondroid thing. Or £5 sat finder and learn to use it properly
I used Dishpointer in a google amp to get direction then 3 fiddles in the heavy snow and I get 9/10 reception. I bought my dish for about £22 of ebay with cables, multiuser setup bargain, quality cables and same as the Sky dish.

Sky no idea, you get more of everything but you pay for it.

well we still have a crt tv whihc works fine for now and cant afford a tv upgrade just yet as much as we want to
as you said you use both, that would be good

hd- they like phasing out old tech thats 'not in use any more' so it will have to be upgraded at some point!

does your tv have freesat and freeview inside?!
quite like dave and sky one etc.
i guess i would need to look at the channels you do get on the respective websites
is it freesat that has iplayer and the like? as i watch mostly on demand stuff when i do watch tv (mrs watches more than me)

could probably setup the dish if needs be

As mentioned before, Freeview can be plugged straight in to the telly socket as long as you can get a signal. I can't get it in my town yet and even when I can the channels will be limited :(

You can get two versions of Freesat, one through Sky the other from the Freeview chaps. The Sky one is simply the normal Sky set up but without a contract. Loads of channels but most of them are parp and you have to fight through the pay channels to find the free ones. The other Freesat was set up for people that will never be able to get Freeview. Similar channels to Freeview but not exactly the same. You'll need a dish but these can be picked up for not alot of wonga.

Here's Freesat:

....and here's Sky's version.

right that makes a bit more sense

dont think we will go with skys one then
dont really want to pay more than we have to and the non-sky freesat has plenty of the channels we like by the looks of it

does freeview offer on demand services?
sorry if its been answered, its a lot to consider - bet this is killer for most consumers!

Yes my TV does do both, hence why I put a dish up. Might not have bothered otherwise, apart from when the reception drops out on freeview

Anyways.
FreeSat has to provide the Ethernet connection for on demend services, it'll be part fo teh box you buy as it cannot be FreeSat otherwise.

FreeView might or might not, I thin kI've only seen FreeViewHD boxes have this option, other than that I know nothing about it.

Ignore HD for now as it's no use to you on the CRT screen, though might as well buy a box capable.
FreeView boxes can be cheap and chearful for £20 for Tesco etc, they can be a bit rough around the edges. I use one in the bedroom, bit slow and the EPG is god awful and locks up now and again but it does it's job.

Though why not just stick with your Virgin connection, you should have TV through them and broadband. Prices too high ?

I think only Virgin(cable) & Sky provide Sky1?

Not sure about on demand stuff on Freeview but you can pay for extra channels (Top-Up TV?). You should head over to AV Forums @ http://www.avforums.com/ as most of the questions you'll have will already been asked and answered on there

I hate the Sky empire but have to admit they offer some very good packages e.g get the basic telly package (loads more then Freesat and better quality) + Sky line rental (cheaper then BT) then get e+w calls and broadband for free. Keep wanting to quit mine but it'd cost nearly as much for line rental + broadband from someone else and I'd get much less. You also get the Sky+ box for free. I'd cost £150+ to get a similar quality box from the shops.

we have teh sky+ box from when we used to be with them

will look on av forums

didnt want to be stuck in with a 12 month contract really

Just use that then.
You may/may not need a £20 on off card to get some channels. Your old card may do
