V-brake fitting - any tips?

For Kona's with the dog collar type rear brake cable guide. Thought about just zip-tying all the way along but it's not pretty.
I used to have V's on my old one but I can't think for the life of me think how I did it!! :?
Any ideas much appreciated.

It depends on the size of the frame - for sizes below 18, and also for 18 if possible, you need to use a length of Nokon cable, as below.

I think for size 19 you can just about get away with standard cable outer.

Standard cable outer is so much stiffer than Nokon that it forces the left arm inwards and overpowers the tensioner. A short run of conventional outer is stiffer than a longer run, as you get on the larger frame sizes.

Based on the pic above, I can't see why a standard noodle with a small length of cable outer wouldn't just simply work. This is how v brakes are run generally, the only difference here is that the cable stop is on the dog collar and not welded to the frame.

Hi Anthony, so have you just drilled the dog collar a bit wider at the back end to accomodate the outer by the looks of it?

I know I've still got my original dog collar from '93 so I can't help thinking I replaced it with one like yours (or the same idea) but it really doesn't ring any bells :?

Won't work the tension in such a short length of brake outer over tensions one side and the brakes can't be balanced.

Tried it a lot of times, best is a problem solver cable stop, mounted on the top tube, remoce the dog collar.

To be honest though, in the true spirit of Retro bike, why run Vees anyway? Good Canti's like M900/Pauls/Avids/M732 etc are just as powerful as Vee's, if set up properly. Their also lighter and look nicer.

To be honest I'm not 100% decided yet. I've currently got Ritchey Logic cantilevers which are okay, but I just remember V's being that much better. (V's were introduced in '96 so they're still retro )

Just clamps around the rear of the top tube, has a cable stop built into it, I have one somewhere spare

Yes have one in the Workshop, but finding it is another thing, as it's in among several thousand other parts, may take me a month to find it as can't remember which parts box it is.
