tyre sidewall failure

Was wondering why the rear end was soft, not a puncture but inner tube hernia.

Is this normal wear and tear? I suspect it is but was hoping to ride these down to the carcass! Still a few mm from that.

Schwalbe tyres so not el cheopo tesco or wilko jobbies. Theyve done a fair few miles so not complaining. I tend not to pump my tyres really really hard, no excuse as i have a pressure gauge!!!! Just until the sidewalls are firm, no idea what psi that is.

Just wondering if a lower pressure will cause the walls to flex more to promote earlier failure?

28 psi on the new tyres, pumped up a bit more than i usually do.

On another bike, more typical, gauge shows 20 psi.

Appears the answsr is yes. Seem to recall recommsnded pressure in region of 30-35 psi

Re:

It's not uncommon for the sidewalls on modern lightweight tyres to wear out before the tread does. I find Maxxis tyres to be particularly bad for this unless you get the EXO protect versions with stronger sidewalls.

I've seen the same on Schwalbe, Continental, Panaracer and Bontrager to name a few.

Skinwall tyres are the same.

Thats cheered me up. Sidewalls on these tyres are really thin, but they are a good compromise on price longevity , puncture resistance, oiff road grip and weight, so much so i replaced wiuth same, £18 pair from cr,.

Will put a bit more air as well.

I run 60psi. It crushes everything before it even gets chance to puncture my tyres.

I've noticed the tiniest distance on an under inflated Continental buggers up the sidewalls.

Re:

I've had to bin too many Schwalbe tyres (always rear) because of sidewall failure. I used to put it down to poor riding skills and catching the walls on rocks, but came to the conclusion it was too low a pressure. The Maxxis seems to have even thinner walls than Schwalbe. I''m keeping the pressures up and fingers crossed.

Re:

Same here - I haven't binned a tyre due to worn tread in as long as I can remember, always a worn/gashed/shredded sidewall :x And once a completely wrenched carcass...
