To mod a 1995/6 hei hei into the 2000 or not

At the risk of getting hate mail I am thinking of moding my Hei Hei 95/96

The upgrades would mean weld rear disc mounts to the frame

Swap out the Pace RC36 Evo Pro Class for something lite with remote lock out

Change wheels which are Hubs: Hope Rims: Mavic 231 CD Grey

The idea is to shave as much weight as possible or am I chasing a pipe dream and this is never going to be a good idea ???

Do it, mod it and ride it. Build the bike that you want it to be.

Im with above.. its yours ... make it what you want ... but think long and hard about modding the frame as theres no going back .... is it something youll regret once the retro fever kicks in again ???? Only you have the answer my friend :?

If you want something modern you'd want a 100mm fork anyhow. Why not sell the kona and buy what you actually want?

Mmmm...who are you going to get to weld rear disc tabs on...and its going to look a mess I fear.
I have no problem with using modern finishing parts on an older frame...but I think you may be wanting to go too far.

You'll have to have deep pockets to get a Ti frame modded! Enigma will charge you £100 for the disc mount plus £30 for EACH hose mount (usually 4 or 5 on a disc compatible frame)!

I'd leave it as it is and buy a disc compatible frame with modern geometry if that's what you want.

Your 1995 Hei Hei doesn't look anything like a late-model Hei Hei anyway (1999 was the last year for Hei Heis), as it has the flat top tube rather than the standard Kona sloping top tube that they had from 97 onwards.

It was designed for a Marzocchi XC-600 which was quite a bit shorter than the RC36 and way shorter than modern forks.

I personally wouldn't get tabs put on....I've got a Hei Hei and toyed with the idea myself but realized it's just not worth the hassle so have a Duster for wet use/abuse.

I've put fairly modern XTR and components on mine and it does go well, light, lovely to ride and fully useable (in the dry of course)

Don't sell it, I think it's something you would regret...well, I know I would for sure!

Well spent last night looking at and thinking .... like you guys say once hacked no going back !

Any suggestion on replacement forks ?
The pace look really nice but weigh a ton !
Think I would be more than happy by shedding theses

I would agree with NOT modding.
I ran a bike for ages with avid mechanical disc on front, and V on back, including a couple of big euro races. V brake was prefect, just get some flak jacket cables or some such..
Forks - if you have to change I would suggest Rebas, add a few more spacrs to bring them down to 65mm or so.
They are great forks, you can get thjem second hand, and then increase the travel and use again if you ever want to.
