tIB's Custom Pace RC300 build

Swings and roundabouts: front gearing issues seem sorted- shifting well between the front rings and engaging correctly. Sorted. New shifter has rear mech working well in all but gear 6 which slips- I'll investigate. Bike also shifts- it's quick.

Bad news was I suffered yet another chain snap after a drink stop- getting going on this thing seems to be an issue. I'll try a new chain since this was has now been snapped and repaired more times than I can remember, but I wonder if there is too much sideways stress on the chain I'm particular gear combinations?

At some point I'll do a test ride on this bike without issues...

After a bit of reading I think ive probably found my issue and think a new chain will sort- I was rejoining using the old link, which I've since found out is a no go!

I have to say it even though it pains me to do so , your a numpty!! , what were you thinking rejoining the chain that often and still using it  even though you didn't know you had to use quick links which i wouldn't hold against you as even i have only just discovered about using quick links but i've only just started fitting these modern chains but my rule of thumb is unless i'm stuck in the middle of nowhere no more than 2 fixes on one chain ....

Okay then unfortunately as i've found out over this last 12 months the links on these chains unlike the old KMC and SIDI are prone to twisting and kinking under stress and even if the links look straight after fitting the chain back together theirs no guarantee that it is plus the link pins aren't as tough as the older designs and loose a fair bit more of the burred edge when the chain snaps and even more when you fit the links back together without a quick link so it's no wonder the 6th gear wasn't working properly so a brand new chain may solve the issue otherwise you'll have to retension the gear cable one way or the other ..

Fingers crossed your issue will be resolved one the new chain is fitted as basically everything seems to work really well and pick a couple of quick links up when you can and you'll be sorted for next time ;) ..

You have a point my friend- that's what 20 years away from messing with bikes does for you. Would have been fine 'in the old days!'.

Chain on reserve ready for collection tomorrow, now I know the score I'll grab some quick links too... who knows, maybe my trouble free ride will finally happen tomorrow!

Well we all live and learn but unfortunately sometimes we slip up not realising times and technology have changed along the way and tbh i hadn't realised at 1st that you wasn't using quick links for repairs but your quite right bitd's you could take apart and put together a chain quite frequently without worrying and the 1st time i took a chain apart i used two small blocks of wood a 1 inch nail and a hammer and fixed it back together using a pair of mole grips and pliers ..

Okay it's good to see your using the click and collect service and will pick up a couple of quick links too 8) so fingers crossed i'll read some positive news tomorrow and those quick links are use once only deals i'm afraid to say ..

Finally!

Spent more time messing with gears and I'm probably as close as I'm going to get a triple ring road front with my components to perfect as I can. Front rings are sorted, I get a little skip in one gear when on the granny ring, and the lowest gear catches the front mech when on the bottom two rings- it's either that of it catches on the top gear. Also a little creaky at the front end which I'll look at...

Can live with all of it though and point itnin the right direction and peddle and it goes... fast. Relieved to have finally completed a decent ride on this without issue!

That's the best pic you've put up fo a while now 8) ..

I'm really pleased for you after such along wait to get out on a ride with the Pace you've finally managed it ;) ..
Well you still seem to have some niggles their and little skips while in gear are usually due to a slightly stiff link which you've probably already checked out although the last time i had this issue it took me a while to realise the fault was actually the teeth on the jockey wheels that weren't lining up properly with the chain so i ended up changing the 11 toothed jockeys for 10 tooth which also improved the gearing all through the range ..

Hmm creaks are usually down to things not being tightend properly or over tightend or BB's or ball race cups in the headtube not sitting flush although i did have an annoying creak once that was driving me absolutely nuts until i eventually changed the handlebars it took around 12 months to find that one..

Yes it's really great seeing you actually getting out on the Pace for a proper ride after all this time and i bet you were really pleased to finally to achieve a decent ride out for a change and in great weather too 8) am i really pleased for you or just jealous well tbh it's a bit of both as i've always fancied riding a Pace ever since i 1st saw the Rc100 advertised in MBUK back in 89 ..

Cheers mate, here's another to celebrate!

Creak wise I have a couple of ideas/places to look, and it is really low level- worth investigating though. Yeah really happy to have finally got a decent ride out of this- I first discovered Pace bikes around 93- at one point I had pace stickers on whatever my current ride was, much to my brothers dismay! Possibly need stickers for this at some point, although I have a non standard idea on that.

Your welcome mate ..

Low level creaks are annoying but their again a creaking can quite often sound like the noise is coming from the bottom bracket area ..

No i never stickered up bikes with brand stickers of another brand but i was only aware of Raleigh bikes plus i was not aware of bike magazines or being able to get hold of stickers back then but truth be told my 1st bike when i was 6 was a Raleigh chipper and only lasted a week as it was pinched off me and when i got it back the frame was broken and i got grounded for a week but i did get a second hand one when i was 9 which got a puncture and that stayed in the garage for a short while then i think my parents sold it because i never saw it again ..

I didn't get another bike until i left school at 17 which i bought an old 3 speed BSA Fire Bird off my brother for £20 which was all rusted up until i cleaned it all up and fixed the toddle chain link with a piece of Meccano and fixed the sturmy archer gears inside the hub and even then i never bothered with stickers ..

A none standard idea on stickers so you gonna paint the decals on then or are you thinking of etching the frame follow by clear coat ,,

Nothing that wild- I'm either going to leave it bare or look to do something semi-custom: I like the handwritten rc200 decals so wondered about having something similar made with a 3 in place of the two. It's not a standard frame anyway due to the weld around the head tube and paint job, so keeping it original has never been an option.
