I'm not too fussed if it's 'stock' or not it's just amazing to think that Raleigh could flog what must have been a very expensive bike with next to no paint on it!

It might be thin paint but they survive really well. Yours is 35 years old and still looks good.

Yep very true. When you think of the technology around then and compare it to now there should be a world of difference........but have a look at the underside of a painted carbon down tube on a Pro's bike after a wet early season and there won't be much paint left.
Imagine flogging someone a Team Issue carbon jobby now for £££££s and having that happen.
I still have mates in the sport over there and they tell me some great stories. Don't ask me to repeat them, I can't afford the legal action....
Trying to post another then it'll be the tomorrow for the rest.
Did I mention this was someones daily scoot for ages, pfffff Belgians :shock:

I have a sneaking suspicion that Roadking had his date of birth stamped on his frame LOL

The frames that we came across that were not a raleigh team issue simply had the SBDU number.

Great find! Congrats, looks great, is it in full working order and what are your plans for it, are you going to do a full restoration or clean it up in its original state? Looking forward to seeing more pictures and some of the wheel rims too if possible.

Just a quick question......have you any ideas why GOD chose that seat stay design with the overlap of the "plate" at the seat stay junction ?

It always seemed to me that someone ordered the wrong bit ?

Ok, sorry about that....photos but no text....still can't use a computer.
So first photo shows a fracture to the head lug, no evidence of bent forks or down tube, just weakness? I knew about this prior to buying.
Inside forks; quality control missed the black paint lug detail on one side.
Underside bb shows yellow paint in middle slots and a brush mark just visible on chainstay. Normal?
Top of bb around lug seems to be just paint blown by rust where water sits on lug. Torch and thumb nail revealed no crack.......yet!
I will try and post a few more photo's later.
Still don't really know what to do with it. The fracture kind of removes the 'ride it as it is' option but total restoration isn't really my cup of tea. Plus for use a 55/56 would suit me better. Or do I considering sale to fund rebuild of 55cm Concorde Squadra ,that I used to race on, that I keep putting off.......

I think it's just a 'design feature' although it can be traced back to Jan Le Grand who was the Raleigh mechanic who also built frames for the squad (didn't he?) and it is a good pointer towards recognising a decent Raleigh.

Hi, ok today I took the forks out and found the letters VER on the steerer tube. Any ideas?
Being a Dutch/Flemish speaker I wondered if it was a shortening of the word VERVANGEN = REPLACEMENT.
There are no other markings.
Also stuck (in years of sandy Belgian mud) in the steerer tube was a small aluminium expander wedge!
I will post photos later if I can't do it now from my phone.
