I've seen the larger trackers glued under the saddle and hidden in a light.
The owners expect to be after the bike before its made it to the thieves den - its not going to survive close inspection.

Putting the tracker inside a metal tube will reduce range surely? Carbon too?

solid metal, shouldn't matter enough to care about, make a cage on the other hand and it's anyones guess.

Unless it's something of sentimental value, it's not worth trying to recover it, I'm not out for getting stabbed or bricked by scrote who's high on whatever a bikes worth of stuff is. Insure your bike. (note, the thief's are well aware of this). Don't lock it in a shitty part of the city.

The average night time bike thief isn't the stabby type
- that's a different game -
but the ebike thief is more in that "Mugger" class, and usually operate in pairs, which we all know increases male aggression and risk in a bid to prove yourself.

I've got a massive statistical sample of thief behaviour in Bristol
The three most common:

Regular thief:
Usually someone's trying to Nick your bike, you shout "hey" the thief gathers his tools and scarpers.
Skinny, looks like his dentist hasn't seen him in a while.

Step up:
Thief replies:
"Yeah what you going to do about it?"
Then gathers his tools and moves off Casually.
Skinny, same dentistry, more visible tattoos, a few items of army surplus, maybe even a hairstyle.

Top drawer thief:

Three guys in balaclavas.
Probably arrived on an illegal ebike.
You don't say "hey"
You just let them take the bike.
