Not gambling is Not possible, with the possible exception of being in isolation in a secure mental institution.

as someone who provides training in risk assessment on a fairly regular basis, I routinely have to tell people that they do a risk assessment every single day, as well as how they have a tolerability of risk based on the benefit they get by doing something vs the sacrifice to do it.
If you want zero risk, your only logically approach is to be dead.

the only difference between me doing that assessment and anybody else is I have to document it.

Same reason car manufacturers aren't making cars more difficult to steal. For everyone that's stolen, they sell another new one...... paid for by everyone else's insurance premiums

You could buy a can of cheap white (or any color of choice) spray paint, and just randomly hose the whole bike with it.
Spray everything, frame, wheels, seat, and all components - It would for sure make it less desirable for thieves.
Of course, it would also make it less desirable for you to own, but hey, it's a jungle out there.

White will look like you've nicked a ghost bike .
Yellow will look like you've nicked a TdF celebration bike

But, mine shown above is from tins of leftover paint - gloss and emulsion, applied with a lolly stick

To my mind, that still looks too good (and tempting) for a 'leave it in town' bike. Decent paint, nice wheels and tyres, matching pedals and grips etc

It's a tourist feature on the Tinsley Canal in Sheffield ( Quite close to the Meadowhall retail centre).
It's a front and rear of a barge joined with a loop. Plywood would be my guess

But I usually make sure I'm parked next to something more desirable.
If I'm doing an evening pub in town then I've either prearranged something where the bar manager will let me bring it in or I don't park it on bike stands but prefer a secluded corner behind a building where nobody ventures

Surprisingly, it's got a lot of people cycling and walking to see it and also talking about something positive for a change. Don't know who's funded it though - waterways or council?

Arguably everything but food, welfare and health is a public waste of money. Not sure where one draws the line.
