Thermal trousers anyone have a pair?

^ You are kidding me @Betsy - H/H Polypropylene bases layers are great.

Got some from almost 20 years ago and they are still the bees knees. If anything, I have been known to go in - erm - the ladies department for tights and socks as a base layer to put on before the H/H stuff. The moment you can create minute air gaps and an air insulation cushion next to the skin it's all good.

+1 for Gore. It's good to mix a bit between Goretex and Gore Windstopper for when it's really cold and dry. Windtex is also good.
Synthetic technical wear is also a good call. From a quality manufacturer. They are warm, comfy, lightweight, and the best that they do not absorb moist, and dry quickly. For high humidity or wet environment really good choice

It's not easy. I personally found if my extremities were good, anything in between was good too.

Feet was the worst to take care of. -5C and 3hrs was about the limit with:
- Ladies DIM socks.
- Ladies DIM tights.
- Gore Windstopper socks.
- Goretex socks.
- Diadorra Chili extreme SPD winter boots with Windtex, oversized by two sizes.

Even then, at the outset of feet feeling cold there is nothing to do but stop and walk / stomp around. Hydration also starts to be an issue, but that is another subject. Oh yeah .... growing a beard is worth doing unless you want to go for the Gore face coverings and look like Hannibal.

Beard keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. Beards, beer and bikes. That's how the brand BBB was founded.

My feetsies get cold sometimes but mostly if I wear tennis socks during winter. Put on my woolies and I'm good. But at some point during a ride you will feel cold in the toe department just because there isn't really much circulation going round there. Get off and walk as Woz say. Or run. If I'm behind you.

Agree with both the beard and the walk theory.
Natural homegrown hairs are the best.
And yes after some walking uphill you can feel those toes are still existing

Yep, HH baselayers, the best at moisture management, not the most comfortable though, for me that is Dry Flo, Merino actually works for oudour control on longer trips, walked, climbed and slept in them on many two week trips without any issues.

Also read recently that they are stopping/banning shakedry products due to environment concerns.

So as a conclusion, you just have to grow a beard long enough and there is no need for thermal trousers anymore

My natural disposition is to be disinterested in technical clothing for biking. Historically that stems from growing up with no money, nowadays i'm just tight.

I've just been layering with some very cheap "thermal long John's" (market-spec jobbies), worn under a pair of black cotton chinos  But in all seriousness I've been toasty, not sweaty, and comfy.

I should get some better gear really, but it is definitely doable with cheap stuff.

You don't need the bike specific stuff to stay warm, a lot of it is marketing nonsense. The key is to get good snug seal against the body with your inner most layer and then from there on it's all about layering on top without going bulky. I bet your cheapo thermo LJ's do the job just fine.
