It’s works fine, was a bit tricky to set up. I’ve changed the cable to standard black shimano now which is a bit better.

I have one of those, also with V-brakes. Argos Racing Cycles in Bristol resprayed it and added a cable stop at the same time. I had mine refinished in their "Dark Bronze" which is pretty close to the US-market colour (UK ones were silver that year but the US ones were bronze). The oily bits are M737 XT but it has an anachronistic 7 speed cassette and XT thumbies, because thumbies are where it's at. I know they sort of work with 8 speed, but it's not optimal.
