It is a steel lock nut, but not a new one and not from a good bike, so it would be fair to assume that it has all the integrity of marscapone cheese.
The Chris King headset "solution", beautiful though it is, would increase my current annual cycling budget by a factor of 2.
Thanks for the cycle shop recommendation, there aren't many "proper" cycle shops that can do real fixing in my neighbourhood, so it's great to hear that such places still exist in London.
andyz you know me too well, your suggestion is within budget and will hopefully be better than messing around with different forks. By the way your front wheel has been pressed into service and is doing very well, I might even get round to cleaning it up this weekend.
