Stupid boy Pike!

I have a M900 'dale like Dave Gibson's in this month's BOTM Comp. Following a respray the pannier rack fixing points on the top of the wishbone rear triangle got a bit difficult to screw into. Now instead of going down the LBS and having them clear them out I have done the stupid schoolbay error of applying too much preesure on a far too long allen key!
The result if the bolt is now stuck in the boss at an angle and worse still the boss is turning freely in the frame. Luckily the paint has not chipped but is there any hope of freeing the bolt to allow me to attach my touring rack or am I going to have to cut it off and resort to using my seatpost fixing rack (with the weight limitation) ?

Realistically I think you might be scr@wed, but it might be worth trying this:

Make sure the area around the riveted thread is real clean and try some superglue to bond the rivet in place. I'd use the gel kind to minimise the chance of gluing the bolt in even more.

If that doesn't work then you really need to try to cut the bolt off and drill the old thread out. Any frame builder who uses alloy should have some of the riveted threads. Only problem is, part of the old one is gonna drop inside the tube and rattle FOR EVER! :shock: .

Cheers for the reply, the thought of a rattling rear triangle is too much to bear!! Any unnecessary click, scrape or ticking drives me mad! As it happens I'm off to but superglue tonight, I'll look for the gel type and let you know if the bolt yields, cheers!

if it rattles pour petseal tank sealant don the hole or syringe it in it will glue it to the side!

Personally, I think you'd be better off with the liquid type of cyanoacrylate (superglue) as it will "wick" in round the loose threaded insert rather than just sitting on the surface. I think you'll be dissappointed if you expect it to hold well enough to allow you to undo a seized bolt though.
It might however hold well enough to allow you to drill out the old bolt and re-tap if you are careful, take it slowly and don't allow any heat to build up in the insert.

As far as stopping things rattling in frame tubes goes, a tiny bit of expanding foam works wonders.

Cheers Andy, I couldn't find gel superglue so opted for the liquid, it did as you suggested, fill the gap around the rivet but I didn't have time to try the bolt. I'm off home to turn it carefully now but agree the chnces of getting the bolt out are slim. I may just cut it off and pack the seattube mounted rack and panniers light on the borders tour.
