Spoke question

Thats awfully nice of you mate appreciated.

Because of the nature of the Pace rear I'm building up I think its flanges will be of a different size to that of a bog standard shimano so i cant just swap the spokes over. I think they're going to have to be new (& correct length) ones...

I need to get my head around this blinkin spoke calculator and get the measurements correct on the hub flanges....

(Cant belive I just typed that)

My Question is can you shorten longer spokes and re thread the ends ?? If so what is the thread size.
In principle, yes you can. In practice, spoke threads are rolled, rather than cut, and you need a special (quite expensive) spoke thread roller to do a good job. Models are available from Cyclo, Hozan, and Phil Wood. None of them are cheap. The Phil version is thousands of dollars. Good bike shops will often cut and thread spokes to order - especially those which deal with small-wheeled bikes.

The thread is normally 56tpi, and of course the diameter varies according to the diameter of the spoke - most commonly 2mm.

A nod and a wink to the one eye that is left open, Jim, yup, 2mm is the standard 'reference', but its actually 2.04mm for 14 gauge to split the hair!
Yup, roll the extra thread, build, and grind off the excess with a dremel. its a bit of a faff, but ensure you don't damage the nipple starting on a snipped spoke with a ragged end

chain reaction will do you spokes starting at a tenner a wheel.

yeah chainreation do but only plain gauge at that price db are avalible from them at £15 per wheel depends what you want really

and always use new nipples never reuse nips thats just being to cheap as they are only soft brass threads and really cant take being reused  8)
