cantis can be nice when well tuned etc, but good (quality) and better setuped (yes they need it too) v's are always better than cantis.
Its not uber retro cool to say it, but its the awfull truth.
"Ah, would that it were, would that it were."
lol ;p
Well, I have no intention on agreeing just because everyone says so
I suspect it's far from everybody who says so. Just those with a clue.

this is my opinion based on the fact that I've only had cantis and v's through out this 20 something years of riding.
30-odd years for me, with rod brakes, calipers, centre-pulls, cantis and Vs.

And I've no doubt that Vs are far easier and more obvious to setup and be effective.

But hey, I respect those who keep them as their main stopping tool.
As you should, they're <deity>'s own choice of brakes, despite there being a whiff of Darwinism about them.

Well as it was in my copy / paste from another post, here's a picture to disscus the pros / cons :D

And a better shot of the angles :

WD :D

WD, that's a very low stradle cable for a canti like that. How does it work for you?

No complaints from my first few rides around the bloc - stop my 14 stone well

I have always set them low but now the bike wears slicks they are the lowest they have ever been.

The bike was out of service for a long time though so a direct comparison and my crap memory is probably not a very scientific way of proving anything other than they work

WD PRo' is interesting as it pretty much goes against most medium prolie conti setups.
Medium profile (here referred to as wide profile) have the pads set up against the arm according to 'instructions', where low/super low profile do not they have them set away.
Also the angle is very low.

I think WD should map the forces running through that brake.
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot goes into bending the canti studs.

I love canti', even though I have to pull the lever with more force. Not a problem though. It a shame decent canti pads are only made by a select few these days.

You can use the same pads as for V's, just buy V pad holders with studs, rather than threads.

Interesting, a couple of questions :

Does more stud bending = more pad pressure ?
Does setting them wide = more stud bending ? OR Does setting them wide only alter the stradle angle ?

If it = more stud bending, why ? Has the relationship between pad and stud moved or has it stayed the same as there is no length / distance change and there are no moving links between them ?

I dont know, I havent thought about it for long enough  and its a Friday

I've had a few already, because it is Friday....this would make a great post on one of "those" forums talking about kinky S+M technics. Copy-n-paste it right in!

I know this is reviving a 2.5 year old thread but I found it by accident while trying to find something i wrote on the usenet forums 16 years ago... and found someone had quoted my entire brake FAQ without actually credited my website...

Your website is now my second favourite 'Sheldon Brown Fan-fiction' site after all the Srands threads on this site. Your attempts are worthy but not a patch on this:

http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=158647

Now that truly is self indulgent crap.

The faq that was quoted came from my website, originally without giving me credit. It had text in it that i never posted to the usenet newsgroups. Additionally what i did post on usenet DID have credit to me as it was posted under my real name, Kristan Roberge.
