whats the old expression you can't polish a turd... why restore or whatever something that was a piss of shit to start with.

This site gets worse everyday, one of the reasons I don't hardly come on here anymore, people blowing smoke up each others arses about how fantastic there Saracen (insert cheap mtb name here). I've got news for you... they were shit when they were new and they still are.

So glad there are alternative sites for people with taste...

You've said the same thing in 124 of your 126 posts, why bother posting at all? I'm glad you found another site to fufill your needs, why not pop off there now and stay.

and my did they not appear out of the woodwork

Yeah , funny how the people who say they don't like the place are so quick to appear

I can't help but think that there are people who are a bit sore that the bike they spent a year paying for doesn't get the same level of attention as someone who has something much cheaper but pages and pages of high praising comments .

I care very little about the actual bike , horses for courses , were all different etc , what I like is the story behind it and the owners enthusiasm .

I can't wait for a certain Marin to become bike of the year .

Sadly without "white dog turd bikes" WDTB (C) & TM taffy inc... ;)
there is nothing to use as a yardstick fro low - mid end bikes, and if there is no yardstick fro them then there is no yardstick to hold the top end and low volume bikes.

The very fact they were so awful and readily disposed of probably does make them rare (ere..) though rarity doesn't mean valuable.

Si, there's nothing positive ever came out of snobbery and hatred, and the last thing it's going to provoke is a raising of standards. The point about owning loads of low to mid-end bikes has some validity, but it's not that simple, is it? Some people enjoy the building, some people enjoy having a shed full of bikes irregardless of quality, some people find it financially easier to spend a 100 quid every few months on a bike rather than 1000 once a year, some people find it hard to sell on their bikes, etc.. Pete's perfectly entitled to his opinion no matter how poorly he makes it, I just have a problem with people who can't see the sense in Never judge a book by it's cover.

I didn't say that snobbery is a good thing. I said we are all snobs to a certain degree. We all love to laugh when some bottom feeder puts up a 'rare and Beautiful bike' on eBay do we not?

Updated to totally agree with DrS

yes :)

Have to point to Velo taking on the 10UTB on his old Raleigh 8) 8)
[it was a Raleigh wasn't it :? ]
Old ,Rigid,with cantis
Took on many new super bikes that day and probably beat them all
[for bright coloured tops anyway   ]

Dyna-ti, Racing is mainly down to the rider. I raced a lovely Mountain Goat with all the kit last year and was beaten by a timorous old lady looking for Tescos

opinion

it's just my opinion, in everything that I do I like quality and always strive for the best. I don't look down on people becuase they don't have £5K super bike. I personally (my opinion) don't see the point in restoring something that was low level to start with, but if thats what you want to do then carry on.

I had cheap bikes back when that's all I could afford, didn't like them and quickly upgraded to better and better bikes. Never owned a saracen but did have a ridgeback which was awful! would I buy one now and restore it now so I can feel like I'm 22 again. NO. would I spend the money on something I couldn't afford then and build it up as original now, yes I would.

Sorry for saying what I think.

That's the point though webby. You state that you didn't like the cheap bikes you had and thought the Ridgeback was awful so why on earth would you want another?

Some people actually quite liked their early mtb's so it's no suprise they may have an interest in them now. :?
