so ,the mustang thread ?

Agree

whats the old expression you can't polish a turd... why restore or whatever something that was a piss of shit to start with.

This site gets worse everyday, one of the reasons I don't hardly come on here anymore, people blowing smoke up each others arses about how fantastic there Saracen (insert cheap mtb name here). I've got news for you... they were shit when they were new and they still are.

So glad there are alternative sites for people with taste...

There is calling a spade a spade and then there is just plain rude. I personally think if the bike is not your bag you leave it be and if it is your thing then please comment, but lets keep it civil and proactive. Bike snobbery should have no place on retrobike, join a secret forum if you want to express such views about another members pride and joy.

and with that outlook so am I- don't hurry back.

So here we have a guy who in his own words chooses to dislike people based on the fact they own a low end bike. What? Read that again, and revel in the idiocy of an utter moron.

Strip away the unimaginative invective filled rant, and you are left with what I think was his only valid point, although again he misses the point somewhat:

Let's search out the rare or historic, find bikes with a backstory, with a past and give those bikes a future.

Two things: One, there are only so many rare or historic bikes out there, and the cost of these is likely to be a limiting factor for most people. Two, if everyone could own a rare or historic bike, how is he going to get his 'snob on' and feel superior to the proles?

Crikey, I have never seen so many MacRetro types outside the womb before

ZigZag old mate, I don't think it's about being snobby or being above anyone. It's about provoking a raising of standards. How many people say they cannot afford a top end bike when the signature below has a dozen low to mid range bikes in it??

As a Yank once said ' Why have a dozen Yugo's when you can have one Porsche'

I don't think Pete or anyone wants to lose the all inclusive nature of RB, just get people striving for better, aspiring to something special. It really saddens me when I read ' My dream bike is a Marin'.

but here is the thing Si- there is no such thing as standards really- so it's hard to raise something that exsists in folks own head- there is a perceived pecking order of "cool" bikes but it's nice that not all subscribe to that or it would be a very dull place indeed.

And some of the comments that have been made make me want to stay in macjockland more not less.

And that's a fair and very valid point Gazz, everyones standards are different for sure. We are all bike snobs- every last one of us!! Even someone riding along on a mid range Marin will see some chav on a Halfords BSO with bar ends pointing skywards and look down their nose at it- it's only natural
To some people the bikes I like are decidely average and nothing special- that's cool, no problem with that. But to pretend we are not bike snobs is living a lie.

yeah I am indeed a bike snob, but I don't go about drawing the line in the sand for everyone as pete has done and say this is the min standard we must all follow- makes for a good thread but just plays into the usuall suspects hands and my did they not appear out of the woodwork

Strong words there webby, I assume you have had some bad experiences of Saracen ownership? What models have you owned in the past to base this on?
I have found the early 90's Saracens very nice bikes to ride and I think this view may be backed up by quite a few other members on here.

If you only come on here to slate other members bikes then its a good job you have found other forums that are so much better than Retrobike.

I can't see the problem in having a site that covers all retro bases. :?

I have little interest in bikes made before 1988 or after 1995.
I have little interest in top or bottom end brands I've never heard of.
I have no interest in road bikes and very little in bmx's.
I have little interest in brands I didn't care for bitd.
I could go on......

Thing is, no one forces me to open threads about stuff mentioned above so I often don't. If I see a bike I like on here I will post a positive comment, if a bike doesn't float my boat I leave the comments for others.

Don't really see what the huge issue is? :D
