Smoking On T.V. BAN IT! Pre Watershed Anyways!

Ban whatever else you like, but for the next 10 or 15 years, bloody leave caffeine alone!

You may have a point with banning television - hey let's ban soaps like Eastenders and Corrie.

Just like to bring some personal perspective into this.

My grandmother, who is now 93, has worked in a laundrette on and off for forty years.

She was a life long anti smoker until recently.

On asking her why she now has a thirty a day Woodbines habit she stated, "That young June Brown is the latest word in glamour, if it is good enough for her it can't do me no harm!"

Can't argue with that. Now where is my lighter?

What is real ? why are we here ? and why are most sausages square ?

Forgive me but I can only be serious for short periods of time now that i'm trying to be less stressed.

Good point about the pubs and how it's linked to a dying tradition.......But would you rather have a loved one die before their time struggling for breath everyday(like my mother in law) or keep a pub open ?

Smoking does actually kill, it's not pretend, it's real.

Fear not, I'll not ban caffeine, it goes too well with cake.

Dirge TV programmes like those you have mentioned, yup I'd have them banned in an instant. Maybe those who are lardarses who watch that dross might get off their arses and excersize a bit more if TV was banned, possibly saving the NHS a few gazillion in the process

Shame TV is such a good propaganda tool, it'll never be banned & the lazy lardarses will just get lardier and more ignorant...

Do you cover their eye's when a very naughty smoker walks past in the street? Get a grip.

I run over, kick it out of their hand, pin them to the ground, and offer them a packet of Nicolites. Like every good citizen would.

Seriously, the same arguments about it not making any difference for smoking to be modelled by adults have always been made. Presumably we are to believe banning cigarette advertising has done nothing?

If David Beckam became the new Marlboro man would it really have no significance?

I am far from an anti drug/drink/smoking killjoy. Quite like sex too.

The last thing I would like to see is a ban on these things being portrayed post watershed. I just don't feel their is an innocuous level of exposure.

Just see no need for a breakfast TV presenter to spark up whilst their colleague handles the weather forecast, nor for stories about grandfathers smoking all their lives then getting hit by a bus to take precedence over the more regular occurrence of people dying slow and painful, tragic deaths after a short life chain smoking.

Why not have presenters snorting coke on Loose Women? Let us not protect the innocent from the harsh reality of life, it weakens their resolve!

As far as taking responsibility for how our children grow up, caring about how the rest of society is behaving is all part of that. It is not practical for us mere peasants to buy islands and withhold all knowledge of whatever is outside the window. We can, however, make sure the window looks out over the nicer part of town for at least some of the day.

I initially though the smoking ban was a good thing, eating out is far more pleasant for one.
Town centres look awful on a weekend as people pour out onto the streets to smoke outside though and the fag ends hang around for ages afterwards.

As for television influences I think Jeremy Kyle is more to blame for making people think it's ok to burgle your neigbour, have sex with close relations and think a birthday suprise is finding out which "uncle" is your father.

Does anybody know how the trend for snuff died out?, Or was it smoking that killed it.

There are two points i would like to make here......

1) with "watch again", tv +1, bbc iplayer, VHS and DVD recorders, the watershed is so out of date, it may as well not be spoken about.

2) we are happy to allow kids to watch people fighting, beating each other up, bullying, drinking blood, killing others etc.... but never being nice to each other or making love :?

Childrens biggest role models are their parents, so how many of you spend more time with your mobile phone than the kids when you are out, and how many of you use the TV to keep kids quiet so you can " get on with something"? When you have kids your entire life should be devoted to bringing them up, not keeping them quiet while you do something else.

Me... i knew i couldn't do it, so didn't have any. I wanted my life, not theirs.

Rant over, nice day for a ride......
