Screwdriver Volt/Mains Tester

Slightly non bicycle related...sorry mods...but I trust some of you a lot more than a you tube video lol. It was a close call...

I bought a volt/mains screwdriver tester the other day.

I have never used one before...

The last time I stuck anything into a socket that was made of metal was a pair of small craft scissors (blunt...) which sent a funny sensation up my right arm....I was about 5 or 6 years old lol.

I'm still here obviously

I did watch a tutorial video on you tube and it appears when they did the same thing with the above mentioned screwdriver nothing more than an internal light came on or not depending if the switch was in the on/off position.

Is it that easy?

I'm worried...

If you just want to test sockets you can buy dedicated socket testers inexpensively, alternatively you can also buy cheap non contact volt sticks / detector pens which are very useful (just be sure to test before use on a known live supply).

Electric screwdrivers are magic.

Instead of getting a whacking shock, when you stick it on a live wire, with your thumb on the top button, you get a soft, flickering glow like the light over the door of a 50s nightclub.
It's a completely different experience.

Being real magic, it probably has terms and conditions attached - soul to the devil, 1year roasting in purgatory, that sort of thing, but who reads ts&cs anyway?

Something like this will test live,neutral and earth without the risk of electric shock, just plugs into the socket same as a normal plug

You see this is the thing...I associate sticking those metal craft scissors into the switch socket with an electrical shock, a puff of smoke and a loud bang. So even when I see other people do it I can't believe it!

What happens if you whack it into a socket without your thumb completing the circuit?

DOH! It won't light up the ickle light bulb I guess worse case scenario?
