Retrobikers Ebay user names

Good thread.
Not sure why anyone deals via ebay these days, it's a dying platform.

I tried to buy a frame recently from a seller on ebay, he's also a member on here (pretty established) and he was really evasive about selling outside of ebay and insisted on postage even though we live less than 10 miles apart...

Felt a tad fishy..
If ebay pick up attempts to sell out of eBay (businesses for sure) they threaten you with suspension, unknown fees, and block some messages without telling you.

You need to know how to take the listing down but not trigger a NannyEbay investigation and the hassle that comes with it.

There are also fraudsters at work, asking sellers to do things differently to the rules

Plenty to make a sensitive soul paranoid.

Same username on both iirc or close enough. I don't sell on eBay much, not in years due to the fees. Buy less now to due to having to pay for the privilege of buying these days.

I think it's a platform that needs to change, buyers always seemed to be favoured when there were issues (not had any myself but know a number of people who fell foul of a buyer playing the game and winning, had an issue as a buyer recently enough, item was fake so asked for refund, answer no. Opened cade, got partial refund offer and could keep item, took that and was then inundated with requests to return the item, even threats to arrive at my house to extract item or revenge, reported to eBay but they did nothing and messages still dropped in until I guess they got bored of sending idle threats).

Now that buyers pay fees, will the reverse happen and sellers always get the benefit? Either way it's all illogical captain.

Would much prefer to do deals on here, folk are more respectable.

There are some RB users who buy low on here and sell high on eBay, that doesn't sit well with me. We all know a few of these users.

Even had a few experiences of users selling on here at a higher price than on other platforms like pinkbike. When I've tried to buy via here and asked for the pinkbike price, I've been ignored. When trying to buy on pinkbike, I've again been ignored.

Transparency and fairness all the way for me.

I am on eBay as: scfra36

So far only as a buying as I have never sold on there.

Most of my selling is done via Marketplace via FB.

I am johnkawasaki on ebay. Buy and sell there, buy and sell here and buy and sell on Gumtree. Depends on the item but I feel they are all slightly different markets that suit different types of bike and parts.

I look on my local Gumtree every day mainly looking for people either giving bikes away or selling 80s and 90s bikes for silly low prices, often £25 quid and below. I will sell on Gumtree as a first resort pretty ordinary stuff up to maybe £150, it's easier than Ebay and with no fees. As an example I picked up a 2000ish Scott Boulder that had been left in someone's garden for years...the chain was rusted solid! It was £10, It had an LX groupset and wheels and a Rockshox Jett fork and when I got it home I took everything off it and transferred it all over to my Kona Lava Dome 2002 which I can now sell as a cheapish rider via Gumtree. (with a new chain!).

I will look on eBay if I need something specific to buy and occasionally see bargains, especially auctions where nobody else has bid and there is no reserve. For retro parts, however it's mostly too expensive. As a private seller the fees are not too high these days and it definitely reaches the largest audience.

I will buy and sell specific stuff on here that is often more niche and I will ask lower prices here but I am aware that some people will buy here specifically to sell elsewhere at a profit. For instance I sold some P2s here for 25 quid in response to a wanted ad, thinking someone needed them for a specific project. After buying my forks the person was still looking for more P2s here which raised my suspicions. About a month later, I saw my old forks for sale on eBay for £65...they were definitely not worth that so I hope they didn't sell at that price!

I have tried to both buy and sell on Facebook but have been completely unsuccessful in both endeavours and have never received a single response to any message to any seller nor to any sales ad that I have posted.

Liars, charlatans, thieves, shithouses and timewasters. But that's enough about me...

I gave up on FB years ago, see above. Ebay, I'm winding down as there are very few real bargains anymore, and fees for this and fees for that, and an increase in the above. I only use it for selling because of the wider audience.

Apart from rb, which seems to be slowing down - and I've had a few experiences here with the above - peak hobby, for me, has passed. My impression of the scene is that the halcyon days of trading have gone, and the hobby is becoming more niche as many appear to be selling up.

I realise I'm down on the scene but dealing with people is hard work these days.

On ebay I'm bukowski...but maybe it should be Eeyore.
