Resting heart rate

Couple of weeks ago I downloaded an iphone app, to keep tabs on my heart rate. Checking it after exercise, and stuff, just to see I'm not over exerting myself..

Now for the past few evenings, just as I get into bed I check my resting heart rate, and it's consistantly in the mid 40's (bpm)

What I don't really know, is whether this is a good sign of fitness, or whether I should start to worry that it's close to stopping..

Any experts on here..?

I think tour de France riders resting heart rate is around 30 as low as 27 (but could be wrong) The lower the better except 0

so based on that then, I'm doing quite well, for a 115kg fat, beer swigging lardy ass ex-smoker retro mtber then...

I wouldn't worry about absolutes with your RHR so long as it's not inordinantly low or high. A significant aspect is genetic, beyond that and not being at the extremes, tracking the trends can be of use, perhaps more so if you're very serious about the training / exercise you do.

Outside of that, though, and for the average person involved in some physical / athletic pursuit, it's largely just a footnote.

I suppose it builds a complete picture if you're monitoring your heartrate whilst exercising, with a focus on cardiovascular fithess improvement.

I remember Indurain's rhr was 29.......mine has been 48 when I wasn't a big fat old glutton, so mid forties if yer fit is ok (as long as yer not getting dizzy or fainting spells).

It's when you hold up a shaving mirror at your mouth and there's no misting that I would advise seeing a doctor and/or undertaker. :P

A question; a 115kg fat, beer swigging lardy ass ex-smoker is the weight thing due to being an ex smoker, meaning did you pile on when stopping the fags ?

And yeah, I am trying to quit at the mo, over three weeks now and I am still struggling on champix too. Current weight 75kg, BMI of 22 and starting to dabble with a HRM attached to my bike and so far greatest reading on that thing is 175 bpm but resting heart rate of 48bpm. I do suffer dizzy spells but have not feinted since modifying my diet towards eating more proteins, but without a particular goal, am just blundering along believing am getting healthier.

Depends how much EPO they've had :)
Several of em died in their sleep!
There are tales of riders being woken up in the middle of the night to do exercises, in order to get their hearts to pump the sludgy, EPO thickened blood round their bodies.

Anyway - I'm sub-50 RHR - and when in for a routine operation t'other week, caused the nurse a little stress as the alarm on the heart monitor kept going off as I was sub-50!
