I read, yonks ago when ahead first came out that once the preload was set on the ahead set and the stem bolts were tightend that the cap wasn't really needed. Now I realise that keeping it there is handy and provides extra security but how essential is it? Just thinking aloud just now but the fork steerer seems an ideal place for a battery pack, I also realise with a bit of jiggery pokery you could fashion a pack/preload unit. But I was wondering if anyone has ridden or rides without one for any reason or could see difficulties. all hypothetical at the moment of course.

you are indeed correct in all your musings there chief
if you want a sanity check ,check out how many plastic stem caps you can get ,oh and those 3"spoke" ones that sram do now
you got a battery pack in mind or making one up ?

Probably make one, I reckon C18650's would fit nicely with a cable coming out the top. Lots of ideas tbh but missing the 'glue' if you like to put it together. You had anymore thoughts on housings?

i couldnt find one fpr my specialized so i whipped one off the inbred and nipped it up. no problem at all.

if the stem bolts came lose i think you'd realise before the stem flew off in your hands.

even if it did get silly lose i dont think a top cap would hold the stem in place anyway

even if you put batteries in steerer tube you could always run the cable through the star and drill a hole in the bolt to let it go through .

It should be fine if the stem is done up properly. Alternatively what about a topcap as used by the jump boys to thread the front brake cable/hose through? Not pretty mind...

Or buy a cannondale with a lefty, they do a tool kit you can store in the steerer.

Actually, you could put the battery in the stem....

I think you're onto something there. Insert battery pack at the bottom of the fork column and fit an expander plug to keep it in place.

You could thread the cable up between the star nut splines, through a drilled hole in the top cap (off centre) and out the top.

you could make a nicer bolt for that

not had time to look at it tbh chief ,too busy with moto stuff of late
as for lights just dug out the previous attempts and made a 3 light mount for the e-bay £1.50 ones

would be interested in your battery thoughts tho

An excellent idea 8)
What of the nightstick[cateye :?] that was pretty narrow.

What about...Bear with me on this
A dynamo  ,it only runs when you're moving and can generate quite a bit of light.
Though i think future systems could use the front hub :?

Striding forward whilst looking backward
