Raleigh Dyna Tech MTB - fitting suspension forks - or not ?

Retro Raleigh

Retro Newbie
Hi All
I have an old Raleigh Dyna tech MT4 and I would like to fit a set of suspension forks.
The questions are
1) The stem is 1 inch so is that the size of the post ? As they seem to be 1 1/8 and 1 inch
2) Are all the threads the same ?
3) Not wanting to spend too much money are the Suntour shocks worth having ?
4) Are most of the shocks the same sort of length as I don't want to jack up the front too much ,sodding the whole thing up ?
Sorry for so many nob questions ,but I'm not realy up with this new suspension stuff.
Thanks Alec

Early set of Rockshox would look ace on that and can be picked up quite cheap. You'll need to get a steerer the same length and threaded unless you change the headset for an ahead system.

I've got some 1" threaded steerer sliver and black Mag 10's that'd look the nuts on that!
If you measure up the existing steerer length I'll see if they fit

I agree that a set of Rock Shox Mag 30, 21, 20 or 10 would suit your Dyna Tech both in terms of travel, appearance and period correctness.

A cheap modern Suntour fork would not only have an overly long axle to crown measurement, seriously screwing up your geometry, but it would also be heavy and wouldn't work very well.
As an aside some of the latest, and more expensive, Suntour Epicon forks are meant to be pretty good but 130mm of travel would be the last thing you would want or need on your MT4.

You will be able to pick up a decent set of Rock Shox for a fraction of the cost of new forks, and they will work with your bike.

Your MT4 features in the 1992 Dyna Tech catalogue and it's well worth looking at the Quantum and Solaris for inspiration:

Thanks for the info chaps,I'm now looking for some Rock Shox 21 or 20 on ebay, the stem is 1 1/8 , need it threaded 160mm long or might go the A Head route ,I will see what comes up.
I'll post a photo when it's all done.
