Question for the tip/skip/bin divers

My little boy is fast approaching the age where he needs his first set of two wheels (+stabilisers). Having looked in proper shops and coughed my lungs up at the cost of them new, how often do they appear on the cheaper end of the market?

Oops  - just noticed I'd posted this in the wrong bit, can a mod move it to the general section please.

eBay's gotta be your first step, Kerplunk. Search for all children's bikes then click on the "UK" where it says "Postage to UK" at the top of the postage column. It should ask you for your postcode. Type that in and hit okay. Then in the "Sort By" dropdown column, select "Distance: nearest first".

You'll finish up with a list of all of the children's bikes starting with those that are nearest to you. Saves on postage/petrol. ;)

Totally off topic: I went to my local tip yesterday. As I drove in, I could see a complete mountain bike at the top of the pile in one of the scrap metal skips. I couldn't quite see what it was or what parts were on it.

Once I had finished disposing of my garden waste, I made my move... I walked up to one of the guys in the fluorescent yellow jackets, hinting as heavily as I could: "Wow! Would you believe it! When I drove in, I could see that somebody had dumped a perfectly good mountain bike into one of your skips! What a waste!". The fellow mumbled at me for a few seconds then pointed to his colleague. His colleague came over, so I tried again. "I was just saying, what a waste of a perfectly good mountain bike, you can't believe that someone would throw that away!". In a strong eastern-european accent, the colleague says "Hmmm, yes... hmmm, every day! Hah, Hah!!".

I left empty handed.
