Please Tell Me About These 2 MTB'

Brylt

Retro Newbie
Hi there, i have these 2 mtb' in my garage that i would like any info on from the knolegable people on here.
The first one is a Mountain Trek 21 speed with thumb shift, which i think has a faulty ratchet as it will only select 3 rear gears, it also has a tranz x components bar extenders (if thats what you call them)
The second one is a Kona Fire Mountain 21 speed withexage country gears and a chromemoly main tube frame with splatter paint.
Any info on these would be much appreciated.

Thanks Bryan

Morning and welcome!

Bike number one is a standard sort of paper round style bike for getting about on with a bit of fun off-roading here and there. Components that are cheap and cheerful but will work with little maintainence for years. It dates from around 1993

The second bike is much more interesting and is an early 'TBG' Kona. This is right in Retrobike territory and will have lots of interest here from other Kona fans. It will date from around 1989.

*edit: well, it looked like Kona by the decals but I have clearly had too much coffee again and am completely wrong!

Better drive side pics of the second bike please as its too fuzzy to make out.

*Edit number 56: I was thinking of this style of Kona decal:

Nice Kona. Very nice.

Do yourself a favour before you rip your scrotum off though.:shock::shock:
Turn the seatpost through 180 degrees so it is the right way round and won't snap the bolt. 8)

Aha!

So I'm not mad!

It is a very early Kona. Wow, am off for a lie down...

A little dab of heat and some gentle persuasion should straighten them curved forks out nicely

Tasty Kona though, I never knew that the early P2's were curved. Every day is a school day 'n all that.

Yes you are, but in this case you were right.

Agreed that the Trek is nothing special, but it can still be a great bike to get to the pub, or just a great fun bike.

"Kona 7X" forks, probably just bog-standard cro-mo for the base model?

OP's look very original, right down to the spoke protector... Probably only saddle and tyres replaced.
