One of the reasons I put black mavics on my 89 Fire Mountain...the other reason was that my mate, as a joke, tried to run off with my bike and fell on the back wheel...he wasn't a small chap so the back wheel was knackered.
Being yoofs at the time we thought we could straighten it...nope...then we thought we could build our own wheels...after all, how hard can it be? All the spokes are the same length, just tighten them all up by the same amount, job done....job not done, job a total waste of time, job was taken to a man that can!
I saw this: http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1588 which led me to believe it was 1988....at the time I wanted the black/pink colour scheme, but got the next years model with project 2's on the front
But I have no other proof and there are no dates on it so I don't know
I'm no Kona expert but that '89 green/yellow splatter Prestige with Deore II (and U brake!) is such a classic model that sticks in my mind I have never forgotten it! Plus it is with so many other '89 brochures I have I am sure it is that year.
