Pioneer Hifi from 1977 to 1980

What goes around comes around, all this mid 70's onwards amplification is now highly sort after. Products often retailing for nearly the original costs.

Sound familiar?

A friend had one exactly like that, and he used to set the graphic equaliser in patterns as well, but up the other way with no bass or treble, and massive midrange. Sounded terrible.

All that black and red and silver. Very 1980s.

Just to show you I'm not bullshitting, here is my 'tower of power'

Just had the ipod running through via the RG-2 expander (it acts as a decompressor for FM and tape) and it sounds bloody amazing!

Which Pioneer tuner do you have in that stack? I have a TX-7500 which I guess is a lower-end model, but works very well with just a simple t-ribbon aerial. IMO hifi tuner design reached its zenith in the mid-late 70's with these enormous analogue monoliths. The Marantz 2110 pictured up there was a fine machine but the the 2130 was the one to have

while from an audiophile perspective the Philips AH673 is very hard to beat

Lots of great pics and useful info at fmtunerinfo.com, though very US-centric in terms of the models tested and how they perform on local airwaves.

Cheers,
Gareth.
