All incandescent light bulbs will be phased out by September 2012 by the European Union.

Why? Who gave them the right to do that??? Why the F🤬🤬k should I replace my 39p 60w bulb with a 11w 'energy saving' £6 bulb that hardly lasts any longer, is half as bright and offer piss poor light quality.

AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!

What they forget is...

That "wasted" heat is not wasted it's transfered to the room. I notice the chill taken off the air in my little workshpp with the 100W bulb. So those CH dials will be notched up a little.

For places like store rooms etc where the light is switched on and off in a short space of time, these energy savers draw more current during start up and are just dim, useless things, they are only efficient if left on.

And... the amount of toxic and heavy metals and extra energy that go into maufacturing the things!

Plonkers all round

I think LED's are probably the way forward rather than these flickering uselss things.

I think they have been banned on Germany for a while and sellers are getting round it by advertising them as 'heat emitters'

I use them in the garage and they are just bloody awful, take ages to come on and offer a very flat light.

It seems tme, that normal bulbs throw out a lot UV which makes stuff fluoresce, making stuff more visible too

I thought one of the selling points of the low energy bulbs were that they lasted a considerable amount longer?

They don't in my experience

i didnt realise they are crap
i did notice that the light is flat as lgf said. very uninspiring if thats any way to describe the light from a light bulb

FWIW, I actually like low-energy bulbs but I don't think that they should be imposed on everyone. Some migrane sufferers say that fluorescent bulbs make their condition worse, and others just don't like them.

Welcome to the new Europe, comrade.

Thing I dont understand is we replaced candles and gaslight, which as well as a fire risk gave off such poor light that many folk ruined their eyesight, with a modern good light source. Now in the interests of energy saving we're going for a light source almost as crap as candle light
LED is the next great step but we're not seeing enough of them available for common or garden lighting yet.

I say keep the old system until a good as old new system is in place. Otherwise its a step backward into the dimly lit past

How so? "ruined their eyesight" that is?

Well I like energy saving lights. Have them where ever possible including in the man cave.
