Paul's Motolites - Hateful pieces of kit

This might be controversial but I decided to replace my XTR V brakes on my Hei Hei with some Pauls Motolites after seeing them for sale on here. CNC machined things of beauty, super powerful, so the marketing bumpf says....

Anyway, off come the XTR's and on they go. Well, I've been trying to set them up since 1530 today, and have come to the conclusion they are pretty but god awful to set up. I think I have got so used to the ease of set up with shimano - they really are bolt on and play but these things are a nightmare. The pads and mounts can move in any direction, so you are trying to set up the pads and then try and get the mounts square. And that stupid method of balancing the spring tension with a combination of allen key and 15mm spanner is stupid. I think I might of got the rear one almost there, but the spacing on the fronts with my Pace RC36 Evo's is not right, I'm stumped. Is it too much to ask to have something special but not a bugger to set up? They do look pretty though.........

The set up looks similar as the Avid SD7, change the washers, put the narrow in front, and the width rear.

I had a similar problem setting my moto lites up.

As mentioned above, you need to strip the brake pads down and swap the ball joint shims of the pads so the narrowest side is between the pad and the mounting face of the v brake. The brake arm should then become more vertical allowing for easier adjustment.

I set mine up by setting the height of the pad with the adjustment on the clamp of the V-brake. Remove the wheel. I then set LHD and RHD brake clamps so they were parallel to each other. To do this lay a straight edge of a ruler across the flats of the adjustment clamps and bolt them down secure. Refit the wheel. Loosen off the balljoint anchor bolt of the brake pad and use that adjustment to add toe and alignment of the pad to rim.

I run them on RC-31 canti mounts so should not be a dissimilar set up to yours. Persist with set up and you will reap the benefits. The only downfall of the brake is that there is too much adjustment. The trick to setting them up is to set the pad mount clamps the same height and angle and use the pad ball joint adjustment for pad toe. That way you have only one variable to adjust at a time.

These are set up with the thin spacer inwards, so I cant think of anyother way to adjust them.

CarrotCake, I'll have a go at your set up today and see if that improves matters.

i thought they were quite easy to set up :? i think once you get them right then you will be rewared with ample braking power. great bit of kit :D
