The holding is awful there, which indeed makes it a dangerous anchorage in anything but the most settled weather.
I've never set foot on St.Kilda, despite being brought up on Benbecula for a while (my father was posted to the missile range on S.Uist in the late 70s). Definitely a place I want to visit. It used to be more difficult then with the Cold War in full swing - the only way was to cadge a ride on the weekly mail helicopter with about 30 mins on the ground on a good day. In worse weather it hovered and transferred things with the winch.
