I volunteer at a bike re-cycling workshop and we've been donated an old Claud Butler that looks very high spec'd - e.g. Campag Record RD. The cranks are un-named but fit a Bb axle with a cross-section I've not seen before.

Pics will follow but this is an approximation of the shape.I thought at first the cranks were held in by cotter pins, but they're held in by a hex bolt in the same position as cotter pins

I believe you have a TA chainset like this.

Thanks, that's the exact same crankset.

Now all we need to do is to find two chain-rings as the existing ones are very worn

Here's a period advert for them. Be careful you don't lose the 'cotter pin' type fixings especially the 2 half-rounded sleeves. They're virtually impossible to find.

The design idea was excellent, the cranks could be moved on the axle to get chainline exactly right. I had a set but let them go before I got into RB'ing, really regret it now.

Suitable chainrings shouldn't be to hard to find though. What are you wanting?
