NATIONAL FOREST SELL OFF PETITION

I think I heard on the radio earlier that the government have abandoned their plans for the sell off.

Looks like they have had a slight change on mind - or at least deferred some of it.

We need to keep signing the petition guys!

Not sure all have you have read the votes correctly. The coloumn is titled "Did MP vote to save our forests?" So a No means that they didn't vote to save the forest. That may well be a negative thing in your eyes.

Good stuff all those who have voted.
Its at 490,000 sigs.
Need to crest the hlf mill ASAP.

Also see a few posts up, tintin has some very valuable causes listed in his sig too. Not necessarily to do with MTBs, but well worth a browse

The reply from my (famous MP)
Dear constituent,

Thank you for your recent correspondence about the government’s proposals to sell off Forestry Commission land in England. I share your concerns and have signed EDM 1199.

The Tory-led government’s plan to sell-off England’s forests is an act of environmental vandalism. This is not the first time the Tories have tried to sell off our forests. In the 1980s they sold off thousands of hectares of land. The true value of England’s forests can never be reflected in the price the Tory-led government gets from selling them.

The Public Bodies Bill, which Labour peers are currently opposing in the House of Lords, paves the way for the complete sell-off of the English Forestry Commission Estate (FCE). It will allow Ministers to dispose of land without consulting Parliament. Tory Ministers have failed to clarify how rights to public access and the maintenance of biodiversity in our forests will be managed.

Labour has been leading the fight against the Bill in Parliament. My colleague Mary Creagh MP, Labour’s Shadow Environment Secretary, has launched a website (www.thislandisourland.org.uk) to keep people updated on the campaign in Parliament.

The Forestry Commission’s estate covers 18% of England’s wooded areas and 2% of land. It consists of over 1,000 woods covering over 250,000 hectares of land with around 250 million trees. The Government wants to remove all safeguards which protect these vital natural assets.

I am proud to say that following strong protests from concerned people, the Tory-led government have agreed to look at the sell-off again. While this is good news, the sell-off could still go ahead next year. I would like to thank all of my constituents who have written about this and made their views clear.

Labour will continue to lead the fight against these plans in Parliament, and work alongside the many community campaigns fighting against these dangerous proposals.

Thank you again for contacting me on this vital issue.

Yours sincerely,

Glenda Jackson MP

Dear

Breaking news! The government have announced they will pause forest sell-offs for a few months. It's a brilliant sign, but our forests are still in danger. If we keep working together, we can save our forests forever - not just for a few months.

The government is still going full steam ahead with changing the law to clear the way for a 100% sell-off. It looks like they hope the fuss will die down if they pause a few sales here and there - so they can press on with quietly scrapping legal protection for our public woodlands.

Our petition is now 490,000 strong. Let's show the government we will keep campaigning until English forests are safe, by making sure the petition passes half a million signatures today.

I have signed it & e-mailed my Conservative MP.

Don't be fooled by the announcement today; the government is allowed to sell of 15% of the woodland per year, they have paused this to re-think the terms and conditions associated with it - worrying as this has happened for a while. :roll: This is politics - they are hoping to distract people from the real issue which is;

The f**King tories want to sell the lot - (yes the remaining 85% that they would otherwise have left) - that is still very much on the cards and not affected by the announcement today.

Nothing to do with money all to do with ideology - pity the Lib Dems are too weak/scared/power crazed to oppose them.

Keep up the good work 38 degrees!

My local MP voted in favour of the sell-off.. I'd write to him but don't have the head for such scribblings. . .is there a 'template' letter anywhere to butcher and send??
