The only thing I would add to what Mr P has written is the bulkhead is steel, and they do rust. It also happens to be about the most awkward part on a Landy to replace or repair properly, so it's worth paying extra to get one in good nick. And stay away from the pre TDi diesels. They will really test your patience. :LOL: And the six pot is not much better by all accounts.

Lightweights (now there's an misnomer if ever there was one!) are quite cool, but carry a price premium nowadays to match it seems. Used to be really cheap a few years back when the MOD was in the process of releasing them.

Worth having a read of this bookbefore you buy so you know what you are looking at. Happy to lend you my copy if our paths cross anytime soon.
 
Yeah, i read up quite a bit about them, "lightweights" are actually a bit heavier than a std series 3 :LOL:, i know about the bulkheads and the rear crossmember, values are funny but from what i've seen i'd need 3K for something decent and 5-6K for a mint show example, originality is a big thing with them so it'd need the 2.1/4 petrol motor in it.

Slowly getting there with the Escort, still love it, engine block and crank is at the reconditioners so will start the engine build when i get those back, still painting the underside and doing bodywork on the shell, hope to get it rolling again over the winter, engine and box in next year, maybe running for the end of next year.
 
Mark - you'll get something MOT'd, perfectly useable and sound for under £2k

Mine was Under £1500 with hardtop plus cab top an 12 months MOT :D
 
Aye Iain, i've seen tidy Series 2A's and 3's for reasonable money but i'm after an ex MOD Lightweight like this one :), original spec ones are going for decent money.

I'd probably do away with the Tilt and fit a van back/roof on it for better security though.

I've always entertained the notion of one as well....but I've travelled in too many.

I had one for a bit, a 2A, loved it but it was a dodgy purchase, cracked engine block I missed, lasted 3 months, less of an issue for someone like you though mark.

Mr P I see you have the same "cruise control" as mine had, I used to lock in the hand throttle on the motorway and trundle along at around 50 :D
