Modern rear shocks in old frames

Retrobike Rider
The rear shock in my SC Tazmon is on its last legs.
Do I import a new Risse Genesis to replace the current one, or try to engineer all the bits I'd need to fit a modern shock in its place?

Would I notice an increase in performance with a newer shock design?

yes ,fit a modern shock
will it make a difference ,thats up to you ,but probably

+1 for a new shock chap.....it ride sooo much better

just make sure you get the right length and stroke shock...you'll probably need new hardware to mount the shock to the frame too..depending on which brand you go for

i'll do some googling

Risse Genesis - I recognise that name.

I was looking at one for a proflex frame, reason being that the shock only has one eyelet.

Those shocks are expensvie, £ 250 ish..

Alternative is to find shock which fits in the same gap, source if off ebay, looking at £ 50 max, then make an adapter, the last bit is the hardest part.

Risse custom jobs are sometime the only way to go
I had a Genesis made for my FSR and it only took 2 weeks from initial contact to fitting it on my bike. Cost wise it was actually about £180 inc shipping and import not bad for a custom made and tuned shock.

For me it was the only way to go as no one else was interested - for the Tazmon you may be in the same boat as the I2I distance is pretty short compared to the off the shelf shock available now

whats the eye to eye length of your current shock?

It looks to be 6.75" eye to eye, and 1.75" stroke.

The next thing that will make things awkward is the mountings at each end, and in the middle.

For those who don't know, the main difference between a heckler and tazmon was that the tazmon shock is fixed rigidly into the frame and uses an eccentric bush at the swingarm pivot. The heckler shock is allowed to pivot at the mainframe mount, meaning no eccentric is needed, but you need extra bushes instead which are more prone to wear.

ouch....that is a rare size

any chance of some closer pics of the rear shock assembly..and the mounting points?

(sorry for the dirty photo, the poor thing has had a quick clean now)

The shock has slowly been leaking oil for a year, but keeps its air pressure ok.
From its normal resting position I can get it to extend about another 3-5mm if I lift the frame up. I don't know if this should be counted as part of the travel or not.

I'll have another measure up without adding the loose travel, it would be good if it was a standard size!

Thanks for your comments,
Phill
