Mismatched wheels

If your running a 'special' rear wheel it doesnt matter, as per the SPIN on my old Tempest mated with a HOPE front hub on Mavic 221 rim.

As for normal wheels, I think as long as the rim colour matches then no problem. On my Karakoram I'm running a Pro-Circuit front hub on Mavic 231 rim and a Sunrace rear hub on Araya rim.

My Stumpjumper and RTS wheelsets both match.

what really gets me is i start a ride with both my non matching (and sometimes non existent) valve caps in the 6 o clock position,. when i finish the ride i've usually got one at 2 o clock and one at 9 o ckock.

i lost sleep over this.

Let me turn that question on its head.

Why should rims match?
It's purely aesthetic (and preference)..

If the rear wheel needs to be stronger, can't the front either be built to the same spec (essential differences aside)?
Or at least appear that way...

The pic Pickle put up of that Tempest . . that would drive me mental every time I looked at it (if it were mine)..

i lost sleep over this
 you mock me. . . but it is very funny.

I don't even know what that is (apart from a wheel).. but it doesn't look off kilter in the pic . . mebbe it's because it's filled in.. dunno.

Basically, all bikes that have matching wheels either have an overbuilt (and overweight) front wheel, or an underbuilt rear wheel that fails too quickly.

There's no good reason for it, other than to save money in manufacturing.

I hate bad engineering.

Limited experience and knowledge of parts shining through now but. .

Doesn't Mavic make, essentially, the same rim but in different widths?

So you could put, for example, a 216 on the front and a 238 on the back?

Or doesn't it work like that?

I am a firm believer in form follows function, not vice versa but I also like things such as a pair of wheels to match..

Yes you could.

Of course, I am a reactionary old curmudgeon. You could run the same rim/hub/drilling combination front and rear, the world won't end or anything.

The bike companies do it so they only need to have one kind of rim in the factory.
