Matching hubs

I have a NOS build on the cards and I have been squirrelling parts for it.. for various reasons it’s going to have a moderate Syncros element..

Now.. i happen to have a NOS Syncros Anniversary front hub - with the cute (or… well… a bit unnecessary) little plaque… but I cannot recall ever actually seeing an equivalent rear hub. Quite possibly they exist, but I’ve basically quit on finding one, let alone NOS.

Bitd I would happily pair, say an M560 rear with Pace RC50 front.. but somehow now, as a grown-up, mismatched hubs feels wrong. Like Marzocchi XC600s on an MC1 era Adroit-type wrong. Just against nature, you know?

So my hub is black (which is irritating because I really need it to be polished to match my other bits - but let’s put that aside for now), which means I could in theory try that old teenage ploy above and stick a NOS m560 on the back. Matchy matchy for colour… ‘cept.. LX has no place on this frame.

Dilemma. If I don’t use that Syncros hub for this build, i’ll never find a better home for it. But rears are unfindable.

Am I the only one that feels the need to religiously match hubs?

I can understand the need for the ideal fit-out.
But the mis match with hubs is rather common and seemed to serve a purpose.
You should ask if this build is some sort of ark building/ornament/representation of you soul or, a rider, to get filth'd up.
I say this as, some mis matching had a practical impact in mind...say...

LX 560 with the gold label 564 suspension tolerant hub.

LX to white industries front. Mainly to posh up the team marin.

Rear 'silent hub' to......xyz front.

Thats just a few of the bikes ive owned.

I didn't think I had OCD until building bikes, I discovered I couldn't tolerate unmatching parts, like stem and post, drive train (well gears, cranks I can handle). Hubs are another area, though I'm ok with a trick front hub and standard rear if it is something a rear partner doesn't exist for like a pace for example, or say a nice hope up front (ti) etc. In your case I'd go for something nice and non matching like a hope rear in the same colour, or something else fancy like a king. I could live with that.

On a road bike i would not but on MTBs mismatching is cooler than a straight up full group: it gives a "works" vibe. Tires from diff brands, chain rings from everywhere, suntour thumbies moving shimano rear derrailleurs.. it´s the right thing.
