Macretro lot question

I lived for some years on the Uists as a child. It's gorgeous in summer. Winter is terrible, gales every week, sunrise at around 0915, sunset 1530. Horizontal rain a lot of the time. Nothing to do, make your own fun.

The long summer daylight, pristine coast, emptiness, wildlife are sensational. The people are used to part-timers who give it a go for a couple of years then move on, and you will have to work hard to show you are not one of those. It is very, very quiet, winters are hard: dark and very wet although not cold. You have to be tough to live there, it's not for the faint-hearted.

I returned to SW Scotland (from England) as an adult, and the dark winters still got me down; I left after 2 years.

I think i could do it for the duration of the job i considering going for not sure i could do it long term as in 5 to 10 years the post is for 12 months only, have emailed them for more information so will wait and see what they come back with

With that outlook and if you can it sounds like a great opportunity. 8)

I'd take it any day. There's a beach on the west side of the island that is stunning and huuuuge. at low tide you can walk for miles and not see anybody. :D

Lewis

I do a fair bit of training and things on the Isles but end up on Lewis and Harris a couple of times a year.
It probably is clicky as mentioned above but then again I am up here in the far north so all of Scotland seems like that at times. I used to have to stay all weekend and come home on Mondays but now the ferry runs on a Sunday so its a bit better. If your going to Lewis then there really is only the ferry from Ullapool as anything else is an epic journey. To Uist (north or south then you leave from Uig on Skye. I am heading over to south Uist next week, really beautiful scenery and freindly people.
Quiet on the cycling side except for summer when there are loads of tourists all over.

Fantastic fishing, kiting and other outdoor sports in the summer then there is the rest of the year...

12 months? If your personal circumstances permit, then jump at it. If you don't like it you'll be home for xmas 2012

Don't know where you've been before but the Outer Hebrides have a unique remoteness to them, yet still very British in flavour. There are plenty "incomers" there already and if you're at all practically minded and useful with your hands (not in a boxing sense  ) you'll get on well.

Watch Whisky Galore a few times :D
