M739/95x V-brake Tune-Up kit info.

So still not bought any kit as never had the time to finish the brakes off. But the misses will not be riding in the cold.
Think I'll grab some of the Hope washers or similar.

So here are some pics of the original question. shim kits's

anyone got any of the Kit 2 pics and info.
Only collating as I intend to pop a wiki fix it article up. (in the next year or so )
I was going to buy a kit as I knew a place, but someone beat me to it (I have had a year or so to buy them I guess but at £12 they aint cheap for some shims and washers.
But what are the 'washers' and where are they used ?

Shims are 50/100/200/300 μm

I've got 4 washers you can have. Pm me details.

Just refurbed a sticky xtr 960 v. The black pivot covers need to come off, carefully put a blade behind and tease them off. Clean the glue off with a baby wipe (best degreaser ever made) then reattach (found Bostick works a treat)

Just read the whole thread... in anutshell there was a flaw with XT v brakes (2002 vintage) wherby they developed a little bit of play around the pivot. The tune up kit basically gave you the bits to take the pivot apart and some wafer thin washers to pack out the gap.

The XTR and LX V brakes at the time where a slightly different design and never developed this play. The next generation of XTs mirrored the XTR design so the tune up kit was only ever aimed at a narrow market.

AllTerrain Cycles lists tune up kit 1 as in stock by the way.

Makes very little difference to performance, more an aural aesthetic device. You got play - you'll hear it!

Dead easy job to do. I fettled a whole bike's worth whilst watching the telly box

Think I must have been a bit braver (read stupid) when I got my M739s a few months ago - they were quite gritty and no amount of GT85 would shift it; so, stripped the whole lot down (including the pressed together main pivot at the bottom) - cleaned, greased re-assembled (using some plastic spacers around the delicate bits on the main bottom pivot when squeezing it back together in the vice) and - thus far - no squeaks, no spongey spongey just tonnes and tonnes of stopping power. Very impressed. 8) (With the V's that is, not my stripping down abilities).

Just to resurrect this thread; I've got two type 2 kits just arrived from the US. One is XTR grey (didn't realise they did those) and the other is black for the XT brakes.
Anyway, I've scanned the rebuild leaflet in to my album (you'll need to download the original file otherwise it's a bit blurry), feel free to do what you like with it, hopefully it's useful for someone. It also lists what comes in the kit so finding the right shims should be easier.
Matt
