Watch the mirror for looking leaner,.
Don't need a mirror. have a wife who is not slow in saying your putting on weight
Don't we all ;-)

It's just that in the mirror, though, you can clearly see if you're getting leaner. The scales don't matter so much with somebody such as you who's about their "recommended" weight.

Sounds to me like you need to grow a couple of inches
 I have had that said before   It's better being short. Then you have small mtb frames are lighter :D
And there was me thinking he was being even more insulting ;-)

Me to. But have met Kestonian. So let it go as a all round good chap :D

The height loss thing is spooky.. even though it was ultimately an error of measurement..

I used to be 6'2" and now I'm 6'0" (and 44 in a couple of months)..

Weight-wise I tend to be pretty steady at 200lb but can normally drop 5 - 10% by cutting out sugar/crisps/sweets/cakes and drinking water instead of tea.
That's my 'easiest' path. ;)

Fitness has dropped since I've cut back on road-walking the dogs (haven't spun any pedals for 10 years so cycling was non-contributory) - used to do 45miles-ish a week..

Aye.. that I know.. Wifey done the measuring (a few times to be sure) at least once in the morning..

Not sure you'd drop 2" over the course of a waking day though?

On a slightly more serious note, my brother wanted to trim a bit of weight so started weighing his meals (cereals, pasta portions and what not) to make sure he wasn't eating too much. It worked very well for him, and the grocery bill went down as well!

I don't understand the whole calorie in, calorie out thing: I had to take 6 months off all exercise and didn't change my eating / drinking habits noticeably. In 6 months, my body weight didn't change, my body fat stayed the same ... my 3 a day Mars bar habit stayed the same. I just didn't understand it, but I am built like a shoelace.

7 years later, at 34 I have to admit there's a bit of a Winter coat on me and my BMI is up to 23 and getting perilously close to the point where I have to think about what I eat.

What's not to understand - the laws of thermodynamics have never been shown to be broken.

CICO stands, period. Of course there are variables - the rate at which individuals burn calories, the degree to which calories are absorbed, hormonal response to intake, and what happens with surplus.

I'm totally with you (and going on the assumption that you've studied this more formally than I) but when one goes from 18 hours of structured training per week to nothing for an extended period and still consumes the same relatively balanced and measurable diet, I thought my weight would increase.

I think you're saying this varies person to person in the second paragraph, and, if you are, this is the part I don't know about.
