Lesser spoked wheels?

When did it become fashionable for wheels to be built with lots less spokes?

Why?

I'm guessing it was purely fashion?

Because people have to mess about and try and 'improve' on a conventional wheel ie Sell more crap to the fashion crowd.

A little like trying to improve round tubed double diamond steel frames.

Altogether....

YOU'RE WASTING YOUR TIME! :D :D :D

Yet another stupid racer fashion. Originally wheels were 40 rear, 32 front. Much better engineering, considering the back wheel is carrying more than twice the weight.

The stupid thing is, the more you reduce the spoke count, the heavier your rim has to be to compensate.

I was thinking that - plus I suspect more stresses on the hub flange.

Has it made it really complicated in terms of hubs and how many spoke holes they have, are there any "standards", these days?

All the bikes I have are either 36 or 32, or a mix of 36 and 32. At least I've got a few spare hubs of the age and spec I like :-)

'Standards' as always are dictated by a very few large multinationals and do on occasion change when the next big thing comes along.

Safe to say that wheels are one thing that has stayed static for many years. The fact that (fewer spoked) wheels are doing the rounds means the industry sells wheels in a handy (wheel set) format. The more user friendly ie bike pervs 28/32/34 hub will be with us for many more years. :D

how strong are radial laced wheels? i like the simplicity of the look but always wondered how strong they are? as strong as the spokes? ➡️ :?:

I always thought the integrity or strength of the rim was OK, it was the greater stresses on the hub flange that was the risk / compromise.
