.There was plenty of discussion about the scope of the UK event when everyone was bitching about the price so I am surprised you didn't realise it was a 3 day festival ...
Can't be everywhere mate and can honestly say I was unaware of it being three days, until a friend told me I should have gone to it over the weekend! The weekend I said? He just went with a tent and never rode but just oggled the old stuff and spent near on a thousand pounds on stuff.

Well if you can bare to ride with clips then give it a go next year ...

The only quibble I have with wearing toe clips & straps these days is the vast amount of stopping and starting,
I remember a time when you could pedal from Mansfield to Skegness and not even having to flick the buckle down.

Using clipless pedals these days is much more convenient for me and suffering from a bad back also saves me from bending too much over to flick the buckle loose.

I know what you mean; modern stuff typically works much better but this event is all about old bikes and all the additional challenges they bring ... perhaps you'd be more suited to Etape du Tour ...

After googling this I thought to myself...Is this anywhere near my home

Re:

The Pendle Witches vintage cyclo has been going for a few years now. Although they encourage
vintage bikes, they are not mandatory so it would suit people who don't want to meet all the Eroica
requirements. All proceeds go to charity. In all, it seems like an event much more in the original
spirit of the real Eroica. The course is a bit short but maybe you could extend it, or even encourage the
organisers to add a longer course next year:

http://www.pendlewitchesvintagevelo.co.uk/index.html

You could also always ride the courses of the organized events a 'Pirate style', i.e. don't pay the entry fees
and just ride the course with whatever bike you want. You could make a donation to Sustrans, who support the national cycling network used in the Eroica Britannia, but who aren't given any credit on the EB website.

Old bikes of the 50s, 60's, 70's are not as convenient to ride as a modern machine; why expect them to be ? So you are going to suffer a bit riding pedals, gears, saddles that are old style.

Except l'eroica covers 80s bikes too, and plenty of them are as "convenient" as modern ones. Which "conveniences" are allowed seems to be at random.

So I have to have pedals that pass for being from before 1987. But clipless aren't allowed no matter how old, unless they're Cinelli, because (???)

Cinelli must be magic or something.

Today is no standing on the grass day. The penalty for standing on the grass is death. tomorrow will be no wearing black trousers day. The penalty for wearing black trousers will be death.

Re:

What about using 1/2 clips with leather covers or no clips at all? If me and the missus are wearing clips to do L'Eroica in a few years you can bet they won't be done up tight.

Also, isn't there a manufacturer of modern vintage style cycling shoes (I thought I saw that they were giving some pairs away at L'Eroica Britannia this year). Looking at the number of vintage velo jersey's being worn at that event I don't think the wearing of modern versions of vintage garments is restricted. That should resolve the challenge of finding vintage ones.

If you're into spending silly money then perhaps the daddy of all modern clipless pedals...Cinelli M71

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cinelli-M71-Ped ... 233db599e3

As this thread has gone a little off topic I thought I'd bring it back to the subject of pedals (albeit one's that are still not suitable viz Eroica rules.

The Look PP65s (see my post and pic) are the Daddy of all clipless pedals simply because the Cinelli's went up a design cul de sac - reason being the Cinelli's have a little lever that releases the shoe; so my point is what's the point, they offer no advantage over a traditional toeclip and strap?

Whereas the PP65s were a true innovation and leave a lasting legacy.

The have the advantage that you will never pull your foot out and a max effort and that you don't get numb feet if you pull the stap up ... but the Look is a better designed because of the release mechanism ...
