To someone!!
You try telling that to the dozens of riders who I've spoke to, that didn't go on the ride because of their big footedness and unable to find period shoes in their sizes.

The event sells out every year as did the first uk version, why would the organisers water down the visual theme to accommodate people who don't seem to get the point and spirit the event seeks to define through some rules.

If you want to join in then do so ... get some clip pedals and shoes and join the party ....

my 2 Euros

I did notice mention of larger feeted people, me being one of these freaky types. Pedals may be hardish to source, but that is nothing in comparison to finding shoes. My jealously of dainty feeted cyclists increases every time I see an ad for size 7 or 8 vintage shoes NOS etc etc my size 10.5 / 11 feet never seem to be able to get suitable shoes.

Does anyone know if everyone who used clips had shoes with plates? Plates are becoming harder to find too.

My observation was that most on the longer route were using proper shoes and cleats but on the 30 milers all sorts of foot ware was in use.

The rules exist to preserve the spirit and appearance of the event, clip pedals are an obvious visual cue that a bike is old.

Of course early clipless pedals are period correct but it's not about that it is about the look, feel and spirit of the era ... The whole point of going to the event is to indulge in that ...

The look, feel and spirit of what era? l'eroica has everything from the invention of bikes until 1987. Except some of the things that were there before 1987 are banned in an arbitrary fashion. Clever that.

Saying that things can be "period correct" but not fit the "look, feel and spirit" is the biggest oxymoron, serving the defence of an imaginary version of cycling instead of the real thing.

It's a bit like banning anyone wearing an Iron Maiden t-shirt from an 80s club because you blinkered yourself into only hanging out with people who preferred the likes of Depeche Mode.

l'eroica should give up. It's an event about what old bikes the organizers prefer in the present day, rather than what people actually had in real life at the time. It's the Disneyland version.
