And for once its not mine :shock:

The girlfriend switched her laptop off last night, having had no problems at all up till then.

When she turned it back on again this afternoon it will only boot to a black screen saying "a disk read error occurred press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

Is there anything I can do or is it a job for the local shop?

Its a 2/3 year old Toshiba Satellite running Vista.

Any help would be really appreciated.

before it comes up with the ctrl alt del thing
can you get to the bios screen and restore to earlier point?

using maybe f8 f10 f12 :? (or another f key)

I can get into the bios page yes but there is no restore option in there that I can see?

hmm im not sure after that, maybe some one a little savvy can help
it might be there as repair tools or diagnostic tools or similar?

Thanks anyway, we have a small repair shop in our village so I guess it will have to go there :(

Did you ever create a repair disk through vista or have you got any restore software if so need to get them to hand just in case needed, but before you do this i would take drive out put it in a 2.5" caddie and see if i could read from another laptop or desktop if so do a disk repair in windows back up everything needed and then put back in laptop and see if worked if not thats when you will need the software to do repair, also get yourself a copy of hirens software full of tools to help you.

Pics of screen error will help and full model details on laptop

Also go back into BIOS and ensure you can see the HDD in the BIOS and that its set as a boot device and not ignored as this will also result in that message appearing on you if its disables enable it back to boot devices and should sort you out

Bring it round tommorow and I can have a look at it, plenty of spare parts here, caddies, wires etc.. even a harddrive if needed.
Could possibly slap Win7 on it if Vista wasn't the original.
